The aroma of coconut still lingered in my room long after she had left. Even while playing a game of chess with my anomalous chessboard, her voice rang in my head.

"Scream and cry all you'd like, dearie. No one's gonna hear you. No one will come to save you."

I fought back a grin.

I don't know what to be more impressed by: her audacity to come here and mimic me in that way or how both of us thought the exact same thing.

Frostheim first received the investigation order a few days ago. Several bodies of children were found in the mountains months after their deaths. They lacked clothing and their hearts had been cut out. No one had been able to identify them.

Orphans were the only people that came to mind to fit such a description. I had dispatched several close contacts to monitor the area. The envelope Rory delivered to us was further evidence of what was happening.

Tohma had sent me a video yesterday of security footage caught at a traffic intersection. One of the children, supposedly dead the day before, was walking around town. The picture of health.

Rory Castillo...

An echo rang throughout my room. "Check."

A new sense of irritation bubbled from inside. Maybe thinking of her, even for such a brief moment, made my focus slip.

"That bastard," I muttered, moving aside the chess set.

The doors parted, "You have my sincerest gratitude for allowing me entry into your chambers."

I glanced up from my phone, "You can take your 'check' and shove it up your ass."

I noticed the subtle shine of satisfaction in Tohma's eyes, "You heard my voice then?"

"Shameless, aren't you? How did you even bypass the soundproofing?"

"I have Rory to thank for that. If I might add, she is a wonderful conversationalist. I can understand why she was so sought after in missions. We also exchanged WickChat IDs."

"What does she have anything to do with this?"

He shrugged, "Maybe she can help you-"

"I don't give a shit."

"That's not all I wanted to say. I'll be leaving later tonight to canvas the site. Perhaps you could join me, Captain."

"No. You handle it."

Tohma let out a quiet sigh, hinted with aggravation.

I shot daggers at him, "Don't give me that contrived bullshit. I told you to stop sighing around me."

"I was merely overcome by my gratitude to you. I can rest easy knowing you'll be safely tucked in your room behaving yourself."

"When did you become important enough to get snarky with me, shithead?"

"You won't be able to hide this indefinitely," he cautioned.

"What? Are you going to be the one to sell me out this time?"

Status was a double-edged sword. The higher up you were in the world, the easier it was to obtain anything you wanted. Anyone wants to be associated with you. People would resort to any lengths just to receive a glance of acknowledgement.

But as soon as you upset someone, then a shitstorm follows. I was already in a den of snakes.

"Let me remind you, Captain. I'll always be on your side."
