Cassandra's POV

I walk into the kitchen from outside. It's still early and most of the Covey is asleep still, but trying to make butter at home hadn't seemed to be working and Maude Ivory got upset over it frequently so I had talked to Barb Azure about buying some with a bit of the money I brought from home. I didn't really need much for myself living with the Covey, they didn't make me pay them to stay as long as I helped out, so I thought it would be nice.

Lucy Gray is sitting on a stool in the kitchen when I walk inside, she seems to have just woken up. I set the small bag with the butter in it on the counter next to her and she looks at me confused. I nod towards it, silently giving her permission to look, and she does. She pulls the small container of butter out of the bag and smiles.

"Maude Ivory is never going to leave you alone after this. You might be her favorite person when she finds out you bought butter." Lucy Gray says, keeping her voice quiet so she doesn't wake anyone. I laugh and pull a stool over to sit next to her.

"Why are you up so early?" I ask out of curiosity.

"Nightmare. Maude Ivory and Briar Rose aren't the only ones who get them. Mine aren't as bad as theirs though. Don't wake up in tears or screaming." She says, glancing at the ground. I know she's trying to keep it together for the rest of the Covey, but Lucy Gray might be the one who's been through the most. I wonder if she really has anyone to talk to other than Coriolanus, and now me.

"Do you wanna talk about it?" I ask, she shakes her head and I nod. "Alright."

I grab the butter and go to put it in the fridge as someone climbs down from the loft. I turn around and Briar Rose is standing there, rubbing her eyes sleepily. She walks over to Lucy Gray and leans against her, Lucy Gray wrapping an arm around the girl's shoulder.

"You alright, Bri?" Lucy Gray asks, glancing down at her sister. Briar Rose nods.

"I woke up and you weren't there so I came to find you." Briar Rose says.

"Nightmare?" Lucy Gray asks, Briar Rose shakes her head. She doesn't say anything else and the room goes quiet.

"Hey Bri, what do you think about going with Cassie to go pick berries today? Maybe you can check on the Katniss patch while you're out too." Lucy Gray says, and Briar Rose nods.

"We can do that!" She says. I've noticed Briar Rose seems to like plants a lot. Nature in general, actually. I smile and nod as well when Lucy Gray looks over at me.

"Of course we can, you'll have to show me where we need to go like you did with the meadow though." I say, and Briar Rose laughs.

"Alright, now off to bed for a little bit. I'll come wake you up when you're going to leave." Lucy Gray tells Briar Rose, who frowns.

"Are you going to come lay back down too?" She asks, and Lucy Gray sighs.

"I'll be up in just a minute." Lucy Gray says to her. She nods and goes back up to the loft. Lucy Gray looks at me and I laugh.

"She's precious, how could you have said no?" I ask. Lucy Gray nods and smiles.

"She is." Lucy Gray says, standing up and walking to follow her sister up to the loft.

I smile as I watch her leave before walking into the backyard and sitting on a stool next to the house. I lean back against the side of the house and stare at the sky for a little, just enjoying the quiet for the moment. I think of the time me and Sejanus had gone to sit on the roof of the building my family lived in one night, watching the stars and laughing and just enjoying each other's company. I missed that right now, just being able to talk and laugh with him. I didn't get to see him all that often here, on the weekends I got to but it didn't feel like enough, especially not when I had seen him daily in the Capitol.
