Chapter Fifty Six

Adam made his suspicions plain to Captain Trinity who nodded his head.

"Oh we know Watt and his cronies are involved with the rising chaos of the multiverse and we know his father is probably at the heart. Apart from that we know nothing else. The cosmic champions have tried to land on the Dominator's world with no success. That's the first time that's happened. Nobody or nothing has ever been able to bar the champion's entry to anywhere. We don't know anything else and unfortunately we got to let the other side make the next move."

"What will that be?" said Adam. "When will it be?"

Trinity shook his head. "Any way you'll be late for your lessons."

The teachers were all preoccupied. Einstein had stopped telling jokes and Armstrong mixed the wrong chemicals and caused an explosion. Fortunately nobody was hurt. Blondell had the class singing a dirge. All in all it wasn't a fun day.

Adam managed to get to sleep and when he woke the next morning he sensed all was not well. The Nexus looked dead with no vehicles moving about the towers and no people moving around outside. Malcolm was silent too. Normally Adam couldn't shut him up but Robin Hood's son also sensed an atmosphere of disquiet.

The two boys went for breakfast. What they found was chaos. The room was full of androids furiously beating drums to sound an alarm and other androids running away. Chairs and tables were scurrying off as fast as their legs would take them, and finding hiding places and disappearing into them.

Adam ran outside into and saw Blondell running yet managing to play his lute at the same time.

"What's going on?" said Adam.

"We're being invaded?" cried Blondell.

"By who?"

"I don't know and I'm not waiting around to find out."

Adam saw Dr Armstrong slither across a piazza and fling himself into a waiting buggy which immediately took off. Adam returned to the dining room and went directly to the vending node. He rapped smartly on the top.

"Food please."

Despite the chaos Adam thought it best to have a full stomach before they had to deal with whatever was threatening them.

"Forget it," said Malcolm. "I already tried."

The node remained inactive.

"Where are we going to get food and drink?" said Malcolm.

"I think that's going to be the least of our problems," said Adam.

Adam looked around. Those androids still beating their drums were starting to stop and slink away. Soon the dining room was empty. His smart phone buzzed. Adam took it out and looked at the screen. The call was from his mother and father. Adam was suddenly excited. He had tried to skype his parents the previous evening but as the net was down he got nowhere.

Delighted, Adam spoke into the phone.

"Dad! Mum! It's me. What's happening?"

Something emerged from the smart phone, something evil, some voice that came from a time before man, when the most powerful and worst evils reigned rampant in the multiverse. A cloying sucking voice answered from the smart phone.

"You fool. Your mother and father are gone."
