Chapter Fifty One
Adam and Brigitte looked around them startled. They saw a brightly coloured sky of blue, and white clouds with black outlines around them. In the sky was a sun with a face on it and the face smiled down at them. The sun's rays pulsed out of the sun's outline.
The land around them also had blocks of colour surrounded by black outlines. The colours were bright and dazzling and both Brigitte and Adam had to rub their eyes.
"What just happened?"
"Obviously we were transported from the Nexus to another place which is not part of the Nexus," said George.
"But why?" said Brigitte. "How?"
"That I can't tell you," said George. "But I do recognise this world. It is mine. Just over there you can see the cottage I live in, or my parents do."
They saw a little brightly coloured cottage almost vanishing behind a dale. Cartoon smoke was rising out of a cartoon chimney.
"Did you do this?" said Adam.
"No," said George. "I'm as puzzled as you are. Somebody or something brought us here and I haven't a clue why. I suggest we go to my parents' house. Maybe they have the answer."
"I hope it's not another trap," said Brigitte.
"There is only one way to find out."
They followed George over the cartoon dale. As they walked both Adam and Brigitte looked at their hands and felt their bodies. They were both real enough in this cartoon world. In the distance they saw a cartoon castle and a cartoon forest. They arrived at the small cartoon cottage. On the gate was a sign saying, Trespassers will be set on fire.
"Pay no attention," said George. "That's a joke."
They went up to a cartoon wood door. On that was a little sign saying, Dragon's Den. George knocked on it. The door opened and a larger, older looking cartoon dragon wearing cartoon spectacles peered out.
"George!" he said. "What on earth are you doing here? Who are these?"
George explained what had just happened to the dragon. "This is my father by the way. His name is Barry." he told Adam and Brigitte.
Barry crinkled his scaly brow. "I heard there was chaos in the multiverse. Funny things happening. This must be part of it. Come in."
George went in first. Brigitte and Adam looked at each other.
"Ladies first," said Adam.
Brigitte gingerly entered through the cartoon doorway and Adam followed. Strangely, he could not smell anything. When he entered any building he was first confronted by a smell, or bunch of smells, but there was nothing here. He realised there was no smell on the outside either. He sniffed the air and he felt as though he had lost his sense of smell. Adam didn't like that.
He and Brigitte saw another dragon, this one looked matronly and wore an apron with a floral pattern. This had to be George's mother. George introduced her as Helen.
"Hello Adam and Brigitte," she said. She was smiling but her reptilian face assumed the look of a crocodile grin with large sharp teeth protruding from the sides. "What's the story?"
"We were hoping you and dad would be able to tell us," said George.
They both shook their cartoon heads.
