Chapter Fifty Four
There was an explosion. The radio innards flew across the room and shattered against a wall. The tumble drier caught fire and digital clock and printer blew apart. The children and adults rose slowly from the floor where they had taken cover and looked at the smoking debris. Helen took grabbed an extinguisher and put the fire out.
"I told you it was a stupid idea," said Brigitte.
"What went wrong?" said Adam.
"It could be the phase modulator, the electrical connections, the pulse generator....I haven't a clue." She looked at Adam. "What I do know for sure is that we are all up the creek without a paddle."
"Should we write our wills?" said Adam.
"That isn't funny," said Brigitte.
"I'm not trying to be."
Helen said. "We could try the witch again. She is the only one we know who can send them back and she is still around."
Barry considered this. "It's a long shot but I think we should try one more time."
A brick came smashing through the window and landed on the table. There was a note attached. Barry took up the brick and detached the note, unfolded it and read it.
"How are you all bearing up? Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! The witch."
He slammed the brick on the table. "Not an option."
The phone rang. Barry took it. He held out the receiver to Adam.
"It's for you."
"Me?"
"You. Says he knows you."
Adam was mystified. Who on earth would know him in this place. He took the receiver from Barry.
"Hello?" he said.
"Hello young Adam," said a familiar voice.
"Captain Trinity? Where are you calling from?"
"From the multi-dimensional star ship. It's in orbit around the cartoon world."
"Yeah? How did you find us?"
"I'll tell you once you're aboard. I can't come down to the planet as I have no enchantment to allow me to cope with a two dimensional world. But I can teleport you Brigitte and George to the star ship."
Adam related what he had just heard in the telephone to others. There was a loud cheer. Brigitte wanted to dance with joy with someone but George was two dimensional so they danced around each other.
"Sorry about the damage," said Brigitte.
"Forget it," said Barry. "Helen break open the bottles of electric fire. Our fast is at an end."
"With pleasure," said Helen.
Brigitte said. "I thought of something. If Stanley Moon's magic allows George to move around a three dimensional world and he now has no power will George still be able to enter a three dee world."
"Once the enchantment has been cast," said George. "It's permanent unless Moon chooses to remove that enchantment. Moon can't do that as he no longer has his power. Anyway, only one way to find out."
With that the three children vanished. They appeared on the deck of the star ship. Brigitte collapsed to her knees and kissed the steel floor. Adam gazed around him and saw the vast chamber was empty. It was eerie seeing something that had been full of creatures of all descriptions, now bare and silent with a floor that seemed to arc away almost into infinity, but which Adam knew had to end in encircling walls. He saw George was standing not far away.
"Looks as though Stanley Moon's spell stands."
George nodded. An android stood by them with a tray and a pitcher of water and copper beakers by it. Brigitte and Adam snatched up the beakers and filled them with water and drank draught after draught. George was served electric fire and drank greedily.
After they sated their thirst the children contacted their hosts on the cartoon world.
"What're you people going to do?" said Adam.
"We're taking Sir Fred's advice and heading for the hills," said Barry.
"Good luck," said Adam.
He turned to Captain Trinity.
"How did you find us?"
"It was simple really. I actually thought our invisible foe had snatched you from the Nexus but I found out later the whole thing was an accident by an incompetent wizard. Last time you vanished you all went to Miss Kringle's world. I thought it could not be Miss Kringle again if it was our hidden enemy because he's not going to repeat the exact same trap. So it had to be your world Adam or yours George. Despite the cosmic net being down I was able to contact your parents Adam, they being cosmic champions. They said you weren't on earth so it had to be George's world. We went directly to George's planet and here you are." Trinity grinned. "I'm not just a pretty face."
Adam looked at the cowl that hid most of the superhero's head.
"That was a joke," said Trinity.
"Hilarious," said Adam. "Why is the net down?"
"It's all part of the growing chaos in the multiverse. Everything's going to pot."
"So is my world now," said George.
"Mine's already gone," said Adam.
"And mine," said Brigitte.
' "Can we eat?" said George.
