Chapter Fifty Eight

The hairs rose on Adam's neck and he felt his heart hammer in his chest. He felt cold and shaky. He decided George's advice, right this moment, was the best he'd ever heard. So Adam made his way to the entrance to the dining room with George. Malcolm stood alone with an arrow in his bow aimed at the expanding hole in the wall.

Adam grabbed him by the shoulder.

"Not so fast you wally! Whatever's coming through that wall will not be stopped by arrows. Let's find out who our enemy is before we do anything."

Malcolm considered this and then put away his arrow.

"It does seem the better part of valour," he said sadly.

"Where is Brigitte and the Bug?" said George.

"At the workshop making weapons," said Adam.

"Making weapons? I believe their efforts will be in vain, as dust in the wind."

"We don't know what we're up against," said Adam

"It's logical to assume, given the degree of panic, the invading force will be awesome so we won't be much of a match."

"I'll fight anything and anyone," said Malcolm.

"And you'll get yourself killed," said George. "This is a job for cosmic champions."

Malcolm looked at Adam who nodded vigorously.

The great object that was coming through the wall extended itself into the dining room and stopped. It was a ship, an old fashioned wood ship with tall sails and a wood bow and a prow. Atop the prow stood an armoured figure.

"I believe that is the Dominator," said George. "I had my suspicions."

The great ship slid to a halt and the Dominator stepped off the prow and descended via a flight of wood steps to the floor of the dining room. The Dominator was dressed from head to foot in armour and his helmet held two glowing red lights for eyes. His hands were big terrible talons and a black cape whipped and billowed about him.

The Dominator stepped onto the floor of the dining room.

"I am the Dominator," he rasped through his helmet. "The Nexus is mine."

"That was the thing that tried to snatch me from my bed when I was four," Adam gasped.

"It's a demon from Hell!" said Malcolm.

"For once," said Adam. "You got that right."

"Actually, he hasn't..." started George.

"Shut up George," said Adam.

Captain Trinity strode up. "Now come along," he said addressing the Dominator. "You must have permission to enter the Nexus so unless you are able to show me proof you have said permission I must ask you to leave."

The Dominator sprang at Captain Trinity and flung him aside. Trinity bounced off a wall and was momentarily stunned. Meknos entered the dining room followed by Matron. Both Meknos and Matron attacked, Meknos sprinting forward and Matron flying towards the Dominator with furious beating of her wings.

The Dominator made part of the floor rise up and envelop Matron in a cage. The cage flaoted in the air with Matron flying about it struggling to free herself. The Dominator grabbed Meknos and ripped him apart.

Trinity had regained consciousness, and his eyes glowed hotly. A beam of red energy burst from his eyes and sped towards the Dominator, who deflected the beam of energy with a wave of his gauntleted hand. The blast struck a wall and blew a hole in it.

Trinity sprang up and threw spheres of blue energy at the Dominator who merely deflected them. Suddenly the floor beneath Trinity became like water and with a cry the super hero fell into the floor and disappeared out of sight.

Next there was a rippling in the air about the dining room and men and women appeared in various strange garbs and things that were not men and women but aliens and figures of fairy tale and myth. Adam thought he saw something that looked like the fabled Minotaur,

"The cosmic champions!" said Adam. "Look there's my dad and mum. That phone call lied."

"What phone call?" said George.

"Tell you later. Watch."

The Dominator's eyes glowed even more brightly. The assembled champions suddenly all turned to glittering statues of rock crystal cluttering up the room, including Adam's father and mother.

No more seemed to be coming.

Clifford Watt and his cronies entered the room. Clifford's visor moved admiringly about the rock crystal warriors and took in Matron floating in her unbreakable cage.

"Where's Captain Trinity?"

"I sent Trinity to this planet's core."

"Father, you are a genius."

"Son, you are an idiot. Where is the one called Adam Brodie?"

Adam turned to his friends. "Why does he want me?"

"It may have something to do with the Dominator's attempt to abduct you as an infant," said George.

The three peered around the doorway.

"Find Brodie," said the Dominator. "And bring him to me."

Adam looked at his friends. "We got to go."

"Where to?" said Malcolm.

"It's time to see the principal."
