4 : Two Kinds of Pain

"We thought it'd be fun."

"We thought we'd be safe, but... we didn't realize the... horror waiting for us on the island." Darius says. The fire crackles and aluminates the area around, "Claws... Teeth... Screaming...So much screaming."

"How much screaming?" Ben interrupts making Kenji shush him.

"Shh! He's getting to the good part!"

"The T. rex stalked closer. Her jaws opened wide." Darius continues before camera shutter clicks, "What? Huh?"

"For the vlog." Brooklynn explains, "Keep telling your little story."

"T. rex sta--" Darius begins before he's cut off again

"Dang! Ugh! Out of space. Wait, I'm sorry, hold on." Brooklynn mutters, "I just don't wanna delete my selfie on Everest, you know?"

"Maybe I should start over." Darius says and Ben squeaks.

"No! In fact, you can just stop." Ben says. Hecate blocks out the rest of the conversations and focuses on a patch of color in the wood beneath her feet. She's knocked out of her trance by Sammy waving a hand in front of her face.

"Hecate?"

Hecate jerks her head up, "Huh? What?"

Brooklynn looks at her, "Are you alright? We called your name a lot."

"Yeah, yeah I'm fine" she replies while smiling, "What were we talking about?"

"We were considering if we should ask Yasmina to join us" Sammy says

Hecate nods, "I can ask her"

Brooklynn nods, "Speaking of which, how'd you get so close to her so fast?"

"Oh!" Hecate exclaims and gulps, "We, uh, we just-im gonna go ask her" she stands and walks over as Brooklynn narrows her eyes with a smirk.

"Hey" Yaz says as Hecate walks up.

"They're soooo exhausting. They asked me why we're so close and I didn't know what to say" Hecate says with a pout making Yasmina giggle.

"We should stop sneaking around?" She says

"Yes!! Omg, I hate it so much more than I thought. I just wanna hold you on front of people!" Hecate makes grabby hands towards yaz's waist. Yaz pushes her away with a grossed out face.

"Stop being weird" she says before laughing.

Hecate chuckles and leans her head on yaz's shoulder. It's quiet for a second before she speaks up again, "..are they staring at us?"

She feels Yasmina turn her head then move it back, "..yeah."

Hecate huffs, "Diestalménoi"

"I still don't speak Greek, 'Cate"

"I called them perverts" Yaz snorts before pushing her slightly making Hecate laugh as well.

The boxer looks back and notices that everyone went inside. She nudges Yaz slightly before motioning behind them, "We should go inside"

Yaz nods and they walk in. Hecate sits on a couch and pulls the teen down next to her. Sammy gasps a bit before running over and plopping down next to Yasmina.

"You need a friend!" Sammy exclaims

Yaz yelps in surprise while Hecate huffs in annoyance, "What?"

"I'm such a ding-dong! You're alone. And when I feel alone, having a friend around sure is nice." Sammy says. Hecate covers her mouth to keep herself from laughing. She can't believe someone uses the term 'ding-dong' to describe themself. Is she a doorbell? Hecate thinks.
