"A metal rectangle? That's all it was?" Ben says. Brooklynn walks close by, noticing bones.
"There's also these, um... animal bones?" She says
"Whatever it was could have died of natural causes," Yaz says. Hecate huffs, her face paler than before, and sits down. Yaz notices and settles next to her, "Yeah. Not a huge plus."
"No people. No help. Just... questions." Darius sighs, staring in the distance.
A few minutes later, Darius begins gathering sticks to build a fire, the others helping soon after. Hecate and Yaz stay where they are but move closer once the fire is started. Yaz pats her thigh and brooklynn rolls her eyes as Hecate moves over, laying her head in Yasminas lap. Yaz runs her fingers through Hecate's hair. The boxer hums as the feeling helps ease her pounding headache.
"Guys!" Ben exclaims, running up.
"What's up?" Darius asks
"There's something out there." Ben continues.
Kenji shoots up, awake, "What's going on? I heard a noise."
Darius ignores him, "Are you sure, Ben? Maybe this is like yesterday, with the berries."
"I'm sure. At least... I think?" He says.
"I trust you," Hecate says. Yaz jumps, thinking she's asleep. Hecate sits up as something behind to growl, catching everyones attention.
A creature steps out and their eyes widen, "What is that?" Sammy asks
"A saber-toothed tiger." Darius answers and it growls.
"I told you we time-traveled."
"Shut up, Kenji." Yaz says. It snarls and steps closer.
"What do we do? What do we do? What do we do?" Brooklynn exclaims.
"We run!" Ben yells and takes off in a sprint.
"No, Ben, no!" Darius yells before the group takes off after him. Hecate makes it only a few feet before collapsing. She falls to her hands and knees, coughing and holding her stomach. Yaz drops beside her, looking between the saber-toothed tiger and Hecate.
The others don't notice and continue running, not looking back as the large creature steps closer to the duo. Hecate coughs hard and brings a hand to cover her mouth. She brings it away and blood and more green liquid. She gags and turns her head away to puke. The same stuff hits the sand and Yaz looks at her, extremely worried and scared.
Her eyes continue to flit between her girlfriend and the giant cat stalking them. Hecate's eyes shut tightly and her hands dogs into the sand beneath her as pain shattersnher body. She coughs more, falling into Yasmina who wraps her arms around her. Hecate forces herself eyes open, seeing the saber-toothed tiger getting closer.
"St-stay behind me—" she coughs again, leaving a stain of blood on her lips. The tiger launches itself at them and heavye punches it, not even realizing her body moved. The cat hits the ground at the same time he ate does. More blood falls from her mouth as the tiger pounces again.
Hecate moves slightly, pushing Yaz out of the way and wrapping her arms around the tigers neck, slamming it against the sand. She wraps her legs around its body and squeezes, trapping it and keeping it from moving. She presses her arm right against the supposedly exctinct tigers neck. A few minutes pass and it goes limp. Hecate stays in that place for a minute longer, making sure it won't attack.
She lets go, falling on her back. Yasmina rushes over and throws her arms around her girlfriend.
"You're so stupid, and reckless, and—" Yaz stops, "'Cate, your nose..." She raises her hand and wipes blood away from Hecate's nose, "We need to find someone to help you." She says.
"I know, but there's nobody here, 'Mina." Hecate puts her head on Yaz's shoulder, wiping her nose and mouth, "Why am I bleeding so much?" She mumbles.
"I don't know, I'm worried." Yaz replies.
"Did this happen to Sammy when she got poisoned by the Scorpius?" Hecate asks
Yaz shakes her head, "No, she got pale and went unconscious but her nose never started to bleed. You're symptoms are much different. Are we sure it's even the poison causing this?"
"It could be so many things but the scorpius poison makes the most sense to me. It was an experiment, right? So do we even know what the poison does to you fully?"
Yaz opens her mouth to respond but closes it as the rest of the group approaches, "Where have you been!?"
"We should be asking you that!" Brooklynn exclaims. Her eyes dart to the blood on Hecate face and the puddle of blood in the sand, "What happened?"
"Hecate collapsed." She explains, "Which nobody but me seemed to notice" she mutters.
"Did you do this?" Darius asks, crouching next to the tiger, he sounds angry.
"That was me." Hecate raises a hand from her place still in Yaz's arms.
"How could you do that!?" He exclaims
"Excuse me?" She replies, offended, "I was protecting Yaz and myself."
"You can't just kill living things like that, Hecate!" He yells
"The hell I can't!" Hecate stands, walking over, "If something is trying to kill me or someone I love, then I won't hesitate to kill it!"
"It was an extinct species! You cant—"
Hecate grabs him by the face, lifting him upwards slightly, "Do you know how many fucking dinosaurs I killed on Isla Nublar? Do you think I fucking care if it's an exctint animal or not!?"
Darius looks up at her, scared. She shove him away, "Look, I am in a shit ton of pain and for some unknown reason, I'm puking up blood. So please, do not piss me off."
The younger boy glares but says nothing as she walks away. Yaz stands, glances at the boy, and follows the boxer.
"So, what now?" Sammy asks, her eyes following Yaz as she walks away. Brooklynn's following Hecate.
"Now, we do the only thing we can do. Keep going." Ben says.
"And look out for saber-toothed tigers, freak sandstorms, and whatever the heck else this place has in store for us."
...
"It's too quiet." Kenji says.
Hours have passed and they have continues to walk in the blazing sun, "We're hot, thirsty, in the middle of nowhere, and maybe surrounded by who knows what, but that's your complaint?" Brooklynn asks
"Yeah. Because at least we can do something about it." He replies and begins to babble, making random noise as he walks forward. He grunts, hitting something in front of him, "Oh, what the..."
Yaz walks in front of him, hitting the spot he ran into. The area seems to shake, "What is that?" She hits it again and the area opens up, startling them as a passageway appears, leading them out of the desert.
