BATHED IN THE EERIE GLOW OF THE MOON, I FOUND MYSELF standing atop my old high school, a place I never imagined I would return to, especially as a vampire. However, as a newly initiated member of the Khotler clan, these nocturnal excursions had become a familiar routine. Fortunately, the school was abandoned, devoid of any human presence and the FORKS HIGH SCHOOL HOMES OF THE SPARTANS entrance sign was still standing firm on the likely moist soil. The parking lot lay empty, the cars swallowed by the darkness.
"It seems the school has closed for the night," I whispered to myself. "The only way inside is through the roof."
Seth and Leah, the two wolves accompanying me, observed me with inquisitive eyes. A low growl escaped Seth's throat, an unspoken question lingering in the air.
"Both of you shall remain outside," I commanded, my voice unwavering. Leah snarled in protest, but I raised my hand to silence her. "Keep a watch for anything suspicious. And make sure Dina does not catch sight of you."
The wolves nodded in agreement, their heads lowered in submission. I swiftly made my way towards the school, my footsteps resonating on the rooftop. The wolves stood guard, their eyes scanning the darkness for any potential threats.
As I scoured for an entry point, my amber eyes caught a glimmer in the moon's radiance. A steel protrusion, extending from the roof.
"This might be it," I pondered, a surge of exhilaration coursing through my veins.
I hurried towards the steel vent, anticipation coursing through me. Upon reaching it, I noticed the bars blocking my way. Undeterred, I effortlessly removed the bars, my muscles flexing with ease.
Without hesitation, I leaped into the vent, twisting and turning through the narrow passage. The unforgiving flooring forced me to crouch low to avoid scraping my knees.
Finally, I emerged into the school building, landing gracefully on the tiled floor. The familiar scent of the hallways filled my nostrils, bringing back memories of my human days. But now, as a vampire, everything seemed different, more heightened and intense.
I moved silently through the dark corridors, my senses on high alert. The only sound was the soft rustling of my clothes as I glided effortlessly through the shadows. I could hear the faint hum of the security system, but it posed no threat to me.
But soon, therewere two paths ahead, and I had no clue which one to choose. Ayla's life was at stake, and I couldn't afford to make a mistake.
In a split second, I made a choice and dashed to the right, my footsteps echoing on the polished marble floor. The urgency of the situation fueled my determination, pushing me to move faster and with more purpose. I could feel the tension building as I neared the room where Ayla was being held captive. The adrenaline coursed through my veins, fueling my determination to rescue her.
Just when I thought I had reached a dead end, a faint glimmer of light caught my attention, shining through the door ahead. Hope surged within me as I cautiously crept forward, fixated on the gymnasium that lay beyond. As I pushed open the door, the sight before me took my breath away.
The room was enveloped in darkness, and the weight of silence pressed down on me. As I stepped into the gymnasium. The moonlight filtered through the high windows, casting an ethereal glow on the basketball court below. The rows of bleachers stood empty, their seats waiting to be filled with cheering spectators.
But my focus was not on the empty stands or the polished wooden floor. The room was still, and I couldn't see any signs of life. But I knew better than to let my guard down.
Despite the stillness of the room and the lack of visible life, I remained on high alert. As I prepared to exit the gymnasium and resume my search, a faint sound reached my ears from a distance.
