TW– mild panic attack
The last things I pulled out of my backpack were the two portraits of Millie and Alyssa. I had drawn them in my sketchbook and watercolor-painted over them. I made sure to tear them out of the sketchbook for two reasons: 1. to make sure they had a keepable copy, and 2. so that nobody would see the millions of portraits of another specific person lining the rest of the pages.
Alyssa blushed and clapped her hands and Millie grinned and gave me a fist-bump. "Thanks, Olivia. Nobody has ever done something like this for me before."
I watched Nick burn his hot dog to a crisp before I gently roasted mine– to his judging eyes. I looked at the huge, fatty meal. Doctors recommend to eat a maximum of two hot dogs per year. I tried to think– how many had I had this year? Any at all? Too many?
I didn't realize how hard I was breathing until his hand pressed to my back. "Hey, take it easy. What are you worried about?"
"It's gonna make me fat."
"Okay, do you want to eat a salad instead?"
"Nick, we're camping. We don't just have any food we want at our–"I watched as he pulled out a plastic bag of lettuce with a bit of salad dressing in it. "What?" I asked him. "What is that?"
"Well, it doesn't look as good now, but I made you a salad. If you wanted it. You don't have to..."
"Nick, I'm so glad you're my pretend boyfriend."
I hugged him and ate my pathetic little salad with a spork. It was honestly the greatest meal I had ever had.
The only one not around the campfire at that moment was Scarlett. When she emerged from her tent, she carried a beautiful acoustic guitar with her.
"I didn't know you played guitar," Casey chirped up.
"I did," I said, "I knew she was practicing, but I didn't know she was ready to play campfire songs."
Scarlett blushed. "Campfire songs only require a few chords," she said humbly.
"Woah, Scarlett being nervous?" Oliver teased. "That's kind of crazy. Good for you, girl."
That was the first time I noticed Alyssa sitting between Millie and Oliver. Jared was eyeing the girl from a few seats away.
The sky was bright orange above us, orange as our thriving fire. The sun set over the opposite direction from the lake, spreading streaks of purple and red around us. The first few stars poked out.
Scarlett played an original song on the guitar, to our amazement. We all complimented her as she jokingly bowed like she was the most famous person in the world.
Ryan spoke up. "Best playin' I never seen round here in Colorado. D'ya know anythin' by the Bea'les?
(A/N: I have no clue how to write accents bc I don't wanna overdo it but I don't wanna underdo it either??? Help Ryan's supposed to have a cockney accent, think Hobie Brown)
While Scar was playing, Nick put his arm around my shoulders. Suddenly, the sound of a loud crinkling of plastic filled the air. While Scar tried to keep playing, the sound became unneglectable. "Okay, sorry, but what the heck is that?"
"Oh, just me," Jared said matter-of-factly. "I was opening up the marshmallows for our s'mores." He continued to do so while Scar put her guitar away. I felt bad for her, as she was forced to stop mid-song. He then took out a marshmallow and put it into Alyssa's mouth, smoothly sitting between her and Oliver.
Alyssa hesitated before eating the marshmallow. An awkward silence radiated from their seats. "So, who wants s'mores?"
I caught the marshmallow on fire, proceeded to let it burn, before creating a full-on smore with it. I took a bite, and it was good, but I remembered I had no bathroom to throw up into.
Long story short, Nick ate the rest for me.
We all shouted goodnight and entered our tents. Each tent was decently large. I was tired, so I layed down for bed, but I saw Nick holding up his New Year's resolution before laying down beside me.
"Have I ever told you how beautiful you are?" He asked me. Did he think I was asleep? Did I just dream of him telling me that? I drifted into hypnagogia, my mind not registering the words.
And that was the point where I think I fell asleep.
