Chapter 1

Moving to a new house is always stressful, especially when you're by yourself for the first time.

I just moved out of my parents' house to a neighborhood in Colorado so I have nobody to help me move in except the random movers I hired, which I guess is nice. I have to unpack all alone, though.

I unpacked most of my items until I only had two boxes left. I slipped on my hand-painted Lovejoy hoodie and sat at my newly unpacked PC to take a break. I didn't have enough shelving to put the last items in my room.

After watching some of my favorite content creators for a few hours I turned on some music on speaker. I sang quietly to myself as I hung up some of my clothes.

My name's blurry face, and I care what you think...

My doorbell rang after a few minutes of this and I immediately turned my music down and went to answer the door.

"Hey, sorry if my music was too loud, do you want me to turn it down?"

My face turned to see a man about my age with blue eyes and light hair that draped down above his eyes. He was holding a plate covered in aluminum foil and smiling warmly.

"Oh. I'm not here about that, I only heard the music when I got really close to your house– here, I brought cookies that my brother and I made together."

My face became hot at the sight of his smile. "Wow, thank you! Which house are you in?"

He pointed to a family home across the street diagonally from mine. "48," he answered.

"Thanks," I told him, "I'll be sure to return the plate."

"No rush," he told me assuringly. "I'm Nick."

"Olivia."

"Nice."

He paused as if he was trying to remember what else he had to say. Suddenly his face lit up as he said, "Oh, my sister wanted me to ask you if you needed help unpacking."

I blushed out of embarrassment and told him I was alright and didn't need help. He pointed to my shirt. "But Are You Alright? You know, because of... you get it."

I laugh and tell him, "You really don't have to help, but if you want to, I could always do with a little less work."

He followed me inside and sat in my spinny chair by my bed. I had just finished setting up the fairy lights above my mirror, so Nick helped me put up some potted plants with some charms from friends in them.

Once we were finished I took the foil off of the plate and took a cookie

Once we were finished I took the foil off of the plate and took a cookie. My eyes widened at the taste. Nick laughed. With my mouth full, I asked him, "Are you and/or your brother professional bakers?"

"No, but my Aunt is. She basically raised me so I know a lot from her." He smiled at his thoughts. "She likes gingerbread."

"Okay, Peter Parker, I think I'd like to meet this Aunt May of yours."

He grabbed a cookie for himself and gave me the same reaction. "Wow, you're right. I guess I learned a lot." I laughed and started unpacking my final box. I pulled out my journal and put it in my desk drawer, then a sketchbook and some art supplies. Nick eyed me with a cookie in his hand.

"Do you draw?"

"Badly." I tossed the sketchbook to him. Opening it, he saw lots of Lovejoy fanart as well as some random sketches of everything from motorcycles to trees. Turning the page, he saw multiple sketches of some of my old friends. "Who are these?"

I pulled out my phone and flipped through the apps to my photos and showed him all of my reference pictures. My grin faded as I said, "I really miss them."

"You'll have to draw some people here, then. Have you met people yet?"

"The entire reason I moved here was because my childhood friend, Scarlett, lives in the next neighborhood over. This is her." I turned the page and pointed to one of the faces drawn on it. "Do you want me to draw you as my first sketch here?"

A wide smile swept over his face as he fell into an over-the-top pose, gazing at nothing with a fist holding up his chin. "If you'd like to, I guess I'd be okay with that," he said, obviously trying not to smile. He pulled a lock of hair back from his forehead and I laughed. "I'd love to."

I turned back on my music and pulled out my charcoal pencils. Immediately Nick's face lit up and he started mouthing the words, trying not to move too much. "I can just take a picture, you know," I laughed.

"Oh, yeah," he stuttered. "I was uh, just trying to see if you wanted to draw me in person. Or something."

I took a photo of him to use as my reference and immediately he started singing along with the lyrics to the songs on my playlist. At first I had a few songs from Blurry Face which he sang to eagerly. After that was Portrait of a Blank Slate and as soon as I heard the first part of the bassline I got up and started dancing and singing. I have no shame lol

I feel at some point I broke my mind

I'm always searching, the silent type

How do you all make it look so easy?

You open your hearts up so quickly, it scares me

"These are really good lyrics, who is this?" Nick asked. I pointed to my hoodie. "They're called Lovejoy. They're probably the greatest band of all time. I had over 50,000 minutes on my Spotify wrapped last year," I brag. "For context, that's over 39 days."

His eyes grew wide for a second. "Wow. I don't think I've ever been a fan of anything that much."

We talked about anything and everything as I sat there on my bedsheets with my sketchbook, my pencils, and a smile. No topic was off-limits.

New years.

"Can you believe we're already 6 days into the new year?" I said giddily. "I've already broken all of my new years resolutions," Nick said. "Except one. I'm trying to write in a journal every day this year. So far I've managed to keep that one."

Traveling.

"Yeah, so on my flight there was just a 3 year old kid directly behind me kicking my seat and just screaming," I complained. "Would not stop. Her parents did nothing. You would think she would have lost her voice or something."

Love?

"I always get scared of being in a relationship," Nick said with a glint in his eyes. "I feel like I have to love that person enough for marriage before I really commit."

"I get that." I looked back down at the smudges on my paper. I drew out the collar of his shirt around his neck. "What's your love language? Mine is probably physical touch or something, but I've never looked into it."

"Mine is so oddly specific– I really like it when people show me their favorite songs. Just the look on their face is so sweet to me."

I laughed. "I totally get that. When I show people my favorite songs I'm afraid they'll get bored, though. That's why I got up and danced when Lovejoy came on."

Nick looked at me and smiled. "Honestly, I probably could never get bored of you. You seem like a great person."

I stopped him. "Okay, since you don't know me well yet, you should know that I don't know how to respond to compliments. I'm so grateful but I just don't know what to say back or..." I trailed off. "Thanks, Nick."

"Of course, Olivia."
