"Nick, stop shaking the tent," I groaned sleepily as he shuffled through.

"Sorry, sorry, I didn't mean to wake you up. I'm just going to the bathroom. I'll be back in a few."

Why was he telling me that?

Only then did I realize that my sleeping bag was smashed into his. He probably wanted to get away from me or something, how could I be this stupid?

How embarrassing.

I waited for him to come back.

I kept waiting, trying to fall asleep.

I kept waiting, being kept awake by the sound of crying.

I kept waiting– crying?

HOLY CRAP, ALYSSA'S CRYING.

I rushed out of the tent, but I couldn't see anyone anywhere. The noise suddenly shushed, and the porta-potty door was open. Nobody was in sight– not Nick nor Alyssa, and everyone else seemed to be still in their tents.

I headed in the direction I heard the sound coming from. There were no lights near the camp, so I had the stars over the open lake to guide me. It was almost peaceful, if not for my heart beating at 3x speed in fear for both of them.

When I found no-one, I returned to the campsite to look in my tent again– maybe Nick decided Alyssa would be a better tent-mate than me. Or something. I can't think at 3 in the morning.

Then, when nobody was there, I quietly stepped over to Alyssa's and Jared's tent. Not a single soul was in the tent besides a rogue firefly on the thin plastic wall. "No, no, no, nono, no!" I whispered to myself. Alyssa and Nick were gone. Nobody in the parking lot, by the lake, or in the forest as far as I could see. There was a small wall around the portable toilets shielding them from the view of the lake. Maybe, I thought, they were somehow hiding behind there.

"Where do you think they are?"

Jared stepped into my sight. Had he followed me? We were decently far away from camp.

"I'm not sure. Why do you think Alyssa was crying?"

"I don't know. I heard it too," he muttered, looking around the moonlit clearing. "I couldn't help but notice Nick's voice calming her down. Do you think they snuck off together?"

I felt like I had been punched in the gut. "Dunno," I said. "That doesn't seem like Nick. Or Alyssa, for that matter."

"Honestly, they haven't been back for a while. Alyssa probably tripped over a rock or something and needed protection. I bet they're out kissing under the starlight somewhere right now." Jared cursed under his breath. "My girlfriend and your boyfriend."

"He's not my boyfriend," I snapped.

"He won't be if he's doing what I think he's doing." He paused and glared at me. "We should get them back."

"What?"

"If they're out having fun together, why don't we?"

"I'm not sure what you mean, Jared."

"You know exactly what I mean." He stepped towards me. I stepped back. "It's unfair, don't you think? They get to sneak out and do whatever they want, and we're all stuck here, feeling betrayed by the ones we love."

"I guess so," I frowned, but I kept taking steps away from him. My back brushed the wall.

When he saw I had nowhere else to go, he obviously took it as a sign I was submitting to him. He put a hand on my shoulder. I didn't even realize he was this close to me.

"Jared, sto-" He put his free hand on my neck, trapping me there. My breathing became limited.

"I don't want to." I only now realized I was crying; the tears fell down my cheeks.

His hot breath brushed my skin, followed by cracked lips. I turned my head away, but he persisted with his attempts. "Please! Stop!" I screamed, to no avail, because his grip tightened on my neck. My breathing had to quicken to not black out, like he might have wanted.

I couldn't tell if I was trapped by him, so close to me, so horribly close to me, or if I was trapped in paralysis from fear.

"I don't want to do that! I don't want... t-to...!" Darkness covered my vision. I heard something unzip. "You're so hot," he breathed out onto me. I sobbed as everything suddenly felt lighter. I felt free of so many things. My mind did not seem to be in my body. An overwhelming relief came over me as I went unconscious.
