Monaes POV:
Senior year. The most memorable year throughout everyone's high school history. Being a senior also came with chances to participate in things you couldn't before like running for homecoming queen, taking the asvap, or my personal favorite senior night. The one night of the year I can go and stay out late without my phone being bombarded with calls from my parents.
When I woke up the morning of let's just say I was hyped, like really hyped. I was never the type to attend dances or even prom for that matter but senior night, everyone was gonna be there. The teachers don't supervise very well maybe one or two on the whole football field and I heard some crazy stories about what has happened over the years. Before tonight, I still had to bare through the school day unfortunately.
I had a pretty solid routine, gym, school, and work. Rinse, wash, repeat. Yea it sounds boring but I was really just hopeful for the future. I'm in JROTC and have been for the past 4 years. I want to join the army, or maybe even become a first responder like my mom. I just wanted to be successful, Karen was a scientist and Hen saved lives for a living! I had some pretty big shoes to fill and prove I am nothing like my mother. My biological mom who meant absolutely nothing to me.
I made my way into the kitchen to make some breakfast before heading to the gym, nothing big just yogurt with granola sprinkled on the top. I tried to eat a balanced and nutrition rich diet, I was an athlete. I played basketball and did wrestling, I had to stay in shape. Not to mention it was the only thing I relied on to get me a scholarship, my book smarts weren't the best. I wasn't failing but I was barley passing. But hey, at least I had my sports. They were my lifeline.
As I was lost in thought Denny peeped his head into the kitchens and walled over my way. "Yes?" I questioned him, he didn't even have school today I don't know why he's up so early.
"Can u make me some pancakes."
I scoffed at that. If I'm not even fixing myself that good of breakfast what in his right mind makes him think I'm gonna make it for him?
"Denny go to sleep, I am not fixing you no pancakes."
"Please!"
"No!" I countered back attempting to keep my voice down. I could see a pout begin to form on his face as he crossed his arms in defeat.
"Well then I'll make them myself!" He reached over to the cabinet although to short to even grab the pancake mix. I pushed his arm away rolling my eyes at his antics.
"We have a firefighter for a mom, do you think burning the house down is a good idea?"
The next second like clockwork my mom appeared in the doorway. I jumped back not noticing her presence until she caught me off guard.
"Nobody is burning anything down." She quickly intervened. I pushed Denny back into my mom and quickly began chowing down on the little bit of yogurt sitting in front of me.
"Don't choke on it Monae." My mom instructed watching me eat like there was no tomorrow, I stopped for a second before taking the last bite. I finished the whole cup of yogurt in a minute, new record? My mom didn't look very impressed though.
"I'm gonna head out." I told her throwing the fork in the sink and shooting the cup in the trash like a basketball.
And one
