-The next day we got our test scores back. I was a bit disappointed in myself when I found out I got a 82 which was barley passing.
I tried not to beat myself up about it because I couldn't afford to lose focus. I had my cpat in under one day and I was scheduled to take it at like 9am.
I had been training hard these past few months so I wasn't trying to worry so much about it, I was more concerned about the written exams since those are where I struggle more.
Which is why I was sitting at my desk staring at notes. It was currently 3:27 pm and a Tuesday afternoon, I had just got off a 12 hour night shift and decided to follow it up with some good old studying.
My mom was at work, momma was too and my brother had just ended his zoom call. While my parents were at work I had one goal in mind, make sure Denny and Nia are alive when they are back.
That's all I frankly cared about, my other thoughts were being put towards studying. I was not worried about them and their shenanigans.
All the studying was wearing me down, not only that but the back to back shifts, academy, training, it just felt like a loop. Rinse wash repeat.
I haven't had a break in weeks. It was hard to focus on things when I was so overwhelmed and exhausted, sleep wasn't coming easily to me recently. I have this insomnia that just won't go away. My nights were either me staring at the ceiling mindlessly or tiring myself even more. When I did fall asleep at night I was almost always awoken by a nightmare.
I would get tired during the day and find myself dozing off here and there, I'm pretty sure Laurens had to shake me awake I'm the ambulance once in the way to a call.
The call was 15 minutes away.
So yeah I had a case of the good old fashion Wilson burn out, well technically I was a Mathis. I found myself being pulled out of my daze by the sound of my phone ringing. I quickly jumped up panicked and grabbed the device.
I saw it was Isla and answered her call.
"Hey Matt! Uh sorry to call out of the blue but I have to ask a favor"
I sighed rubbing my temple in annoyance, I loved Isla but I didn't feel like doing anybody any favors.
"Sure uh go ahead"
"Well, I kinda am in charge of watching my nephew who was been staying with my family during quarantine. I'm not good with kids and he has colic!" She shouted, before I could answer I heard the phone shuffling on the other end and the next second I heard crying.
"You see!"
"I wish I could help but I'm watching my siblings so.."
"I could bring him over there!" She insisted, I groaned quietly. My moms would kill me if I brought someone over during this pandemic especially while some people were still quarantining.
I didn't know how to turn down Isla though, I had dealt with babies a few times as babysitting gigs but I didn't know if I was mentally prepared to take care of a cranky, gross, colicky baby.
"Uh I mean I guess-"
"THANKS so so so much! You are the best I'm coming over right now!" She exclaimed into the phone and hung up.
Great. If my mom didn't kill me then this baby definitely will.
Isla arrived shortly after with a crying baby in her hands, the minute she rang the doorbell Denny and Nia rushed to the door. Before I could even get close Denny was already opening it.
