The next day was here, and boy was I happy because it was finally Friday. That evening I plopped right in my bed.

My mom was starting Medical school today, I was happy for her and hoped she did her best. Walking into a room of other med school students as a 40 year old female who was lesbian and African American was going to definitely make her stand out.

Rather that be in a bad or a good way was yet to be seen, either way I knew she was capable of proving herself.

While she was at Med School I was receiving a text from my captain saying I may have to work overtime this weekend. Yup on a weekend, when I joined our department I was given the option to sign a waiver that would put me on the list for special deployment.

The firefighters weren't all that bad I thought they would be but the captain had it out for me. He was always in my case and on calls I was always the one out at blame for any problem that happened. I talked to Bobby about it and was waiting for him to get back to me with an answer. I had already put in a station request because even if I couldn't get transferred to the 118 I didn't want to deal with a captain who dwelled on the negative parts about me.

I was happy to get all the overtime I could get though especially because my Captain was not on the special deployment list which meant I wouldn't have to deal with him.

Texas was having wildfires spread all around the state and a lot of neighboring states were sending departments to help, it wasn't certain if we were going to be called but he was just giving us a fair warning if we were.

I tried not to stress over it to much, I would be happy for some overtime.

I was snapped out of my thoughts when I heard the door slam shut. I got up and peeked out my room to see who it was, my mom had just returned from her first day of Med School and she looked pretty pissed about it.

"Uhm I'm guessing it didn't go well?" I asked her carefully.

Her shoulders were tense and her face was filled with aggravation.

"Just a thoroughly annoying lab partner who made me feel like I was failing before I could even try" She scoffed. I followed her into the dining room where she placed down her text books on the table. "Well if there's one thing I know about you is your the complete opposite of a failure" I said in hopes to make her feel better.

In return she flashed me a smile, "Thanks baby"

I nodded going into the kitchen to grab her a plate of food, she was sitting in the dining room studying and hadn't even gotten a bite to eat after her long day.

I made her plate and placed it right in front of her moving the books to the side.

"Mom you had a shift today and med school. Take a break, or eat something at least" I insisted, before she could decline I handed her a fork and persistently pushed the food closer to her.

"Do you need anything else?"

She looked down at her food thoughtfully for a second before opening her mouth to reply.

"Well you could take out the trash that's been sitting in the kitchen all day"

I sighed and went to go grab the bag. I tied the handles into a knot and dragged the bag out the door. Once I made it to the end of our yard I tossed the bag into the trash can making sure to close the lid down on it.

While brushing my hands off after I heard rustling behind our recycling bin. Questioning what the noise could be I slowly made my way behind the bins scared to see what was hiding.
