EVANGELINA

I placed a hand on my chest, trying hard to control my breathing as the elevator moved up. The image of Erico coming after me was still intense in my mind, and I barely knew what I could do to get out of this mess. I could only hope that Aemelio would realize that he was a danger to me and help me out. If he had saved me earlier, he could do it again.

The door slid open, and the first thing I saw was three men in white clothes, standing guard in front of Aemelio's room. "Don't be scared," I whispered to myself, even though I was shaking.

With all the courage I could muster, I limped out of the room to the men. They shifted their gazes at me, and I felt the rage in their eyes. The burly one stepped in front of me at once, and his eyes were glued to the nightdress that I had on. I had no choice but to pull it closer to me.

"What do you want here, girl?" He snapped.
With shaky fingers, I pointed to the door. "I need to see the don."

"What?"

"You heard me. Tell the Don that I'm here to see him, and I'm not going to leave this place until I meet him. This is very important, and it's about life and death. Surely, you can be able to do that much for me, right?" I asked quietly.

The man looked at his fellow guards, and they all laughed like I had said a huge joke. I didn't have the time for this. Unable to stay still, I moved forward, my legs hurting like a bitch. I didn't get far when two men hoisted me up with both hands.

"Let me go!" I cried.

"Shut up!" They thundered.

I growled so hard, hitting them as quickly as I could, but it was also of no use. They held me tightly, pulling me closer to the elevator. I couldn't let this happen! There must be something that I could do to stop them. But, what? My brain was dead, and the only thing that I could think of was Erico killing a cat like a sadist.

"Stop pulling and whining," one of the guards grumbled in apparent irritation.

I ignored him, pulling at their hair with all I had. They screamed as hard as ever, dropping me down. I fell on my butt, feeling the pain in my legs spike to my brain at that very moment.

"Don!" I screamed in a last-minute attempt as I held onto my leg.

"I need to talk to you. I know you can hear me, but I must seek your presence right now! Please don't ignore me!" I cried heartily.

Tears slid down my eyes as the men came at me once more, pulling me up harshly as they led me to the elevator. I screamed even more, only for the door to pull open, and Aemelio stood there in white shorts. He was shirtless, but right now, it doesn't seem to matter.

"Get her down," he ordered at once.

The men wasted no time, placing me back on my feet. I pulled my nightdress closer to me, feeling like I needed to hide now that Aemelio was here. All the courage I had come here with was suddenly shaking at his presence, and all I felt was genuine fear, knowing that anything might go wrong.

He shoved his hair backward as he glared at me. "You didn't do all this drama to stare at my face, right? Why are you here?"

I bit my lips as I looked at the other guards, who looked ready to throw me out of there if their boss gave the word. And I also remembered how Aemelio had acted the other day, and since I came here, Erico has not been seen by others. It was as though he were in a world of his own.

"Fuck!" Aemelio cursed suddenly.

I took a deep breath as I tried to speak, but he turned his back on me almost immediately.
