EVANGELINA

"Try to smile," I whispered to Erico as we walked into the elevator. He ignored me completely.

Well, that was a good thing, though. The last thing that I needed was to do now was have some dialogue with him like he was the most amazing soul in the world. I couldn't stand him for anything, and I was equally curious to get away from him.

Sliding my hair behind my ears, I waited for the elevator to ding. Erico's birthday celebration didn't make sense to me, thanks to the fact that Aemelio claimed that it would be disastrous for his brother to be seen in public. So, why the change now?

The elevator finally dinged, and I forced myself not to think about those things. It wasn't my business what Aemelio wanted to do with Erico. I just needed to mind my own, and I would be fine.

"Let's go," I mumbled to Erico.

He did as he was told while suddenly holding my arm. I turned my gaze to him, but he remained indifferent to everything. What was going on with him now? I honestly failed to understand this man. And, I seriously didn't wish to understand him anymore.

Ignoring his hand, I made a move to the reception. There were countless people gathered under the colored lights, but there was no hint of Aemelio.

"Do you have any idea where your brother could be?" I asked softly.

Erico ignored me at once and proceeded to yawn. Ok, he wasn't ready to respond to me. And, with his attitude, I couldn't leave him alone. One of the maids suddenly came in our direction and noticed she was wearing a blue and pink outfit.

"Your attire is nice," I whispered.

She smiled at me. "I know. The thing is, the boss wanted us to stand up at the party. We are just following his rules."

"I understand," I managed.

She slid the tray of drinks to us, and I grabbed two of the wine glasses there. I gave one to Erico and he surprisingly held it firmly. "Can you tell me where the don is? I have to take this man to him. It would help me a bit."

"Yes, but isn't your outfit a bit inappropriate for the party."

I looked down at myself, and I realized that was putting on a short cream gown, which was different from the classical black gown almost all the women were wearing. Would it be more appropriate to change? But...

The maid smiled lightly. "I know you feel that you shouldn't dress up since you're a worker, but the boss has announced that anyone who looked underdressed or didn't follow the dress code would be punished severely. You need to do something about that as soon as possible so you can attract some good positive energy to this party," she added.

I sighed as I looked at Erico. "Ok, I would go change, but you need to help me with one thing," I managed.

The maid raised a brow. "What is that?"

"Get this man to the boss," I managed.

She smiled then. "Alright, I would handle that," she said.

I slowly pulled Erico's hands off and made him leave with the maid. He didn't touch her at all and kept his distance from her as though there was some sort of pandemic going on. Rolling my eyes, I made my way out of the reception and moved to the elevator.

I kept drinking until I was back in my room. There, I changed into another black gown which was still short. None of my clothes were decent enough, but one couldn't blame me because of the way I had lived earlier in the past. Anyway, I saw some of the guests showing some skin and smoking. Surely, it wouldn't be a problem.

Should I stay here for some time?

No, Aemelio would get mad if I left his beloved brother for a minute. I grabbed the empty wine glass and quickly walked back to the elevator. Within seconds, I was back in the hall, but a man in a black jacket caught my eye. He was walking sporadically in the next room, and I could tell that he was anxious about something.

Maybe, he was having difficulties with the maids? I turned to leave, only for him to knock a vase down on the floor angrily. What was going on? My feet moved before I could register, and then my ears got perched on the door.

"I don't get it. I have done everything you've said so far, and I can't do anything else again," he screamed.

That voice...

It was Bruno's. What was he doing that made him so antsy? There was nothing that made sense right now, but I had to get it. I pressed my ears even harder, hoping it wouldn't make a sound again.

"No, I can't keep doing this. Capone is going to get suspicious of me, and he is something else when he is angry," he cried.

There was a pause, and then Bruno threw his head back as he growled. I dodged at once as I hoped that he didn't see me. It wouldn't be good if he did. Whatever he was saying had to be known by no one else than him.

"Yes, I know I told you that he said I should look out for everything Evangelina did, but this is different Raimundo. It's like crossing the line and paying me more money is not going to make the whole thing look good overnight," I snapped.

Raimundo?

Oh, Lord!

I placed a hand on my chest as I tried hard to breathe. Bruno was telling me to hash out everything that I was doing. I couldn't believe it. He smacked something again, and I jumped out of my skin.

Slowly, I placed my ears once more, and I could hear Bruno curse before he disconnected the call. He was heaving as I watched him. Just as I was about to leave, my bangles caught the knob of the door unnaturally, and I found myself being pulled harshly into the room.

Bruno turned to look at me right there. Fuck!

"You?" He asked in shock.

I pulled the bangles harshly away from the knock, causing the beads to bounce everywhere. Next, I went down on my knees, hoping to get a hold of the beads.

Bruno pulled me up with so much that made me take an involuntary step backward. "What are you doing?"

"How long have you been standing there, Evangelina?"

I shrugged. "I just came. I saw the door open, and a strange man pacing. I thought it was a guest who lost his way and was making a desperate phone call. You know how people can be," I muttered with a nervous laugh.

Bruno gave me a look, and I mentally hoped that he wouldn't realize I was lying to him. If he did, then I would be done for.

Slowly, his lips broke into a soft smile. "You don't need to worry about those things, Evangelina. If it were the guests, they could have harmed you. So, you need to be careful about how you go around," he mumbled.

I nodded. "I would be careful," I said as I held my fingers together.

He grunted, pulling the phone back out. "Get me some water from the jug before you go," he ordered.

I sighed in relief. Thank God that I was safe, but how long would that be? If Raimundo was blackmailing him, then, he'd keep dancing to his tunes. It was a shame that someone like Bruno could easily be swooned to the antics of another boss, forgetting his loyalty to the don.

With a sigh, I made my way to the table, and calmly poured the water from the jug into the cup. I would get through this.
