The trip there turned out to not be as bad as Andi expected. As soon as Colby started driving Jake crashed out, face pressed against the window, and stayed asleep for the first twenty minutes, leaving the car in a calm silence as Sam helped navigate and Corey and Andi battled each other on mobile Mario Kart. It was a peaceful ride until Corey got bored and dragged Andi into a game of 'how many things can we stack on Jake before he wakes up'. It was fourteen.
"Damn it, Corey," Andi laughed, holding a hand over her mouth. "You ruined it, I told you not to put the damn shoe on his forehead."
"Oh god," Colby groaned, his eyes on the road. "Did you guys already wake him up?"
"Sam, they touched me while I was asleep," Jake said, rubbing his eyes. "I didn't consent to this."
"Hey," Corey defended. "My uncle told me it was okay to do that as long as the person was sleeping."
"Oh jesus," Sam laughed, running a hand down his face.
They had been driving down an old highway for the last ten minutes and it was steadily becoming more apparent to the group that there was almost nobody out on the road. It was eerily empty, especially on a summer day when the people of the country most often went out for a drive. Colby took a left turn off of the highway and they found themselves on a dusty path that had numerous potholes dug out of practically every inch of it. Thick green forestry loomed high on both sides of them, blocking out the sun's rays and leaving them trapped under a gloomy shade.
"How far into the woods is this place?" Andi asked, pressing into Jake's shoulder so that she could look up at the trees to the right of the car. "We're pretty deep for not even being halfway there yet."
"Yeah," Jake nodded. "I feel like we're about to be jumped by hillbillies on four-wheelers and get fucked in the ass."
"Yeah, what in the Deliverance shit is this?" Corey agreed, his eyes wide. The other four were somewhat used to the surroundings from growing up in Kansas, but he was not.
"I don't want to be fucked in the ass in the woods," Colby whined, turning the wheel so that he could at least try and miss some of the potholes.
Andi held her hands up and pretended to strum an instrument as she made the banjo noise from the Deliverance movie with her mouth. Colby imitated a scared face as he sped up a bit.
"It looks like the coordinates are quite literally in the middle of bum-fuck nowhere," Sam said, holding his phone up for the others to see. "So either these woods weren't here when it was built, or this isn't the address and the guy is just bringing us out here to do some sketchy shit."
"Well whatever it is," Corey said, also holding up his phone. "We're fucked if something happens 'cause there's no service with all of the trees blocking the way."
"Aw hell," Jake dramatically huffed. "Now I can't text Colby's mom all night."
"Pardon?" Colby said, raising a brow as he quickly glanced back at the boy.
"She didn't tell you?" Jake asked. "I'm your new step daddy. Now bend over boy."
"Well now you can join Andi in the daddy issues club," Corey said. "Her dad's probably said the same thing."
"It's all shits and giggles until I use my abilities and tell the Shadowman to eat your ass," Andi fired back with a smirk.
"Hey," Corey flipped her off and she returned the favor with a smile, the two of them keeping their stoic faces for about two seconds before they started laughing. "That's not funny."
Sam pulled his backpack into his lap and rummaged around before pulling out the smaller vlog camera. He began to set it up on the dashboard and fixed his hair before turning to the others.
