Addy
I stare at the live feed covering all angles of the warehouse with the same unwavering dedication as the last eight hours. I barely slept in the last two days and didn't even bother trying to take a shower. Zoë wasn't meant to be tortured, she isn't built for this, and I can't help but feel responsible.
I focused so much on getting them together for Sam's sake that I hardly acknowledge that having us in her life could lead to exactly this.
I run my fingers through my hair with a sigh as my eyes land on Marcus DeLuca, who has been my faithful companion in desperation this entire time.
Marcus shows up on our doorstep early morning, half beaten to death. He worked as a high-ranking member of Cacciatrici for the last year. He's been watching Sam all this time and has warned his sister to stay away from her. When he found out about their relationship, he thought talking to his supervisors would help get Sam out of her life faster.
The result is the exact opposite, as they suddenly had all the information needed to exploit Sam's one weakness, until then they didn't even know about Zoë. The one thing neither of us ever prepared for was her being exposed by her own family.
Marcus' smile is regretful as he meets my gaze, but there is no time to dwell on who's to blame in the situation. In one hour, the security team heads out to get her back. I know we are nearing the end, and for the last ten minutes, my anxiety has only grown.
"We'll get her back, just hold on a bit longer," I say, trying to make both of us feel better. Just a bit longer, I repeat in my head, but for some reason, my heart keeps beating faster. Something is wrong, I can feel it. There is something in the air. An unexpected, yet familiar danger.
As if it's a warning to the storm, the air suddenly begins feeling thicker and warmer.
I felt this before, this strange thing Sam can do where she makes an entire room uncomfortably warm just by her mood. There is no question anymore, my husband did something stupid.
As soon as the thought passes my mind, the doors are broken down, almost cracking off their hinges.
There Sam stands, heavy breathing and the deadliest look I have ever seen. She wasn't supposed to be woken up until we had Zoë back. She wouldn't have been as unstable if we had results.
Her eyes burn with intense rage as she makes a straight line for Marcus. He gets off his chair, preparing for the apology of a lifetime, when Sam lunges forward, putting all her weight behind the fist aimed at his nose.
Instantly he drops to the floor and grabs hold of his face as the blood pours out. Sam drops to her knees, aiming at his face four more times before getting up and delivering a final kick to his most prized possession.
He releases a high-pitched scream that makes Lawrence and his brothers curve with empathy.
"Sam, stop, he's Zoë's brother." Her eyes snap to me with the same fury, instantly making me regret opening my mouth.
Her voice burns deep. "His affiliation is the only reason I haven't killed him yet." Her entire body turns to me as she takes her first step. "The rest of his sentence will come, but you, I have yet to start with."
She takes another step toward me as I take one back. "Zoë was taken, and they have done God knows what to her. And you chose to keep me sedated for two days, Addy. Two days I could have been looking for her. The two days in which my given deadline has passed." She is talking, which is strange. When blinded by rage she barely forms sentences.
"I did what was best for everyone, it is my responsibility to stop you from doing something stupid." Normally, this is the part where she begins throwing things, but instead, her expression breaks in defeat.
