Everything seemed to suddenly move too quickly.
Asaph stared at the pile of papers set on his desk that an archangel had just dropped off. Aziraphale wasn't there yet, it was just Asaph, who was wondering where the Angel was.
Although thinking about Aziraphale was the last thing he should be doing, he had work to file out. Paperwork was the last thing Asaph wanted to do, and certainly not a whole pile of it. They couldn't remember the last time they had this much paperwork, not even getting black holes accepted had this much work.
"Seriously? I'm not even the one working on Earth, why do I need to do so much?" Asaph growled, sifting through the stack to see what was all in there. Most of it was just reading. Blah blah blah blah blah something about the restriction of creations around Earth, blah blah blah blah blah.
"I'm not reading all of this, and I'm certainly not filling out all these papers." Asaph simply chose to ignore it, moving the stack off their desk and onto the floor. "I have much more important things to do than paperwork." Asaph swung around onto their chair and propped their feet up on their desk, legs crossed. She mindlessly played with a pile of stardust while waiting for Aziraphale to return. The Angel said they had a meeting they needed to attend to. Aziraphale seemed to be going to a lot of meetings recently, more often than usual anyways.
Asaph swung their head back with a groan, when would all of this finally come to an end? She was so tired of hearing the non stop chatter about Earth and getting it ready. What was so special about Earth? Asaph never understood that, and he was glad his friends agreed with him. Maybe he should ask the Almighty, asking a few questions wouldn't hurt, right?
Asaph shrugged and got out of their seat, it was worth a shot. It was almost impossible to get a private meeting with God but maybe they would get lucky. They hummed softly to themselves as they walked through the boring halls of heaven, not particularly paying attention to what was in front of them. They eventually arrived at the meeting rooms and walked up to an Angel standing guard.
"Hello, is the Lord in a meeting right now?" Asaph asked, forcing themselves to stand properly for once to appear more angelic.
"The Lord is busy, what business do you have with them?" The Angel asked, cocking a brow at Asaph.
"I just wanted to get a clear understanding of how Earth will work, I'm excited for the creation of Earth but I feel a more clear understanding from the Lord would help." Asaph lied with a warm gentle smile.
"Hmm.. what's your name and ranking." The Angel looked down at the paper they had in hand.
"Asaph, Dominion, ranking 12" Asaph replied as the Angel scanned the paper.
"An Angel will come to your office when the Lord is next available to take up your meeting." The Angel waved a dismissive hand, Asaph dipped their head and left.
"At least I got something." They muttered quietly to themselves, making their way back to their desk.
"Asaph!" He heard someone call from behind, turning around to see who it was. It was Micaiah, they had a scroll in hand and was holding it out towards Asaph.
"Asaph look! One of the Archangels gave me this and I just had to show you!" Asaph looked down at the scroll and took it from Micaiah, opening it up to see what it was. It was a job offer, they were going to move Micaiah to become a Virtue. Asaph couldn't help but feel angry, Micaiah was a great Dominion, there wasn't any need to move them to a different ranking.
"Isn't it great? I'll also be able to work on Earth, with humans! This is so exciting!" Micaiah was glowing, literally, as they jumped up and down.
"Yeah, great." Asaph grunted, handing the scroll back to Micaiah.
"Aren't you excited for me..? You know I've always wanted to work on Earth." Micaiah stared at Asaph, sounding hurt that Asaph wasn't happy.
"Sure I'm excited, go you, it's what you wanted." Asaph turned around and continued heading back to their desk, eyes narrowed.
"We can still be friends! I'll see you later!" Micaiah called, watching Asaph walk away. Asaph ducked down under their desk once they arrived and sat under it, folding their wings around themselves. It wasn't usual that something like this would hurt them that bad, they would just ignore their problems. But this time it hurt more than it should have, Asaph didn't know how to deal with it. So he stayed under his desk and let water fall from his eyes.
He didn't know how long it had been but after a while he started to hear footsteps. Asaph attempted to make himself look okay before they got too close but it was too late. He felt another pare of wings wrap around him and a familiar hum of soft light filled his ears. Asaph moved his wings to see who it was. It was Aziraphale, gently holding Asaph with his wings, not asking what was wrong, not forcing him to talk. He was just there, silently hugging him. Asaph stared at Aziraphale for a while before moving himself closer into Aziraphale, hiding his face in the Angels shoulder. Aziraphale ran soft fingers through Asaphs hair, letting Asaph just sit with him. They both stayed there, not moving, not speaking, not doing anything. Just enjoying each other's comfort and presence, letting themselves feel what they wanted to feel. Asaph had never felt this secure and accepted as this, and he didn't want to let go of this feeling any time soon. If they could, they would stay like this for the rest of eternity, but that would be impossible.
