Tonight's escape attempt features John. A horde of Mogadorians stand between him and my cell, which isn't totally realistic—usually, they don't bother to put in any effort whatsoever to keeping watch on me—but this is a dream, so whatever. They unsheathe their swords and charge forward, and John lights his Lumen on full blaze 'till his palms are white hot and red.

I watch from between the bars of my cell as he torches each of them, generating two fireballs at a time—it's enough. In fact, it's plenty. Using telekinesis, he simultaneously turns their own weapons against them too. He storms through the ever-increasing cloud of ash with as angry a fire in his eyes as is in his hands, until soon, they're completely decimated.

"That was pretty hot," I tell him when he reaches the door of my cell, and he smiles softly.

"Ready to go?" he asks, and I barely have to say anything before the cell door unlocks and he takes me by the hand. I fall easily into his arms as our feet rise off the ground.

"Did you learn how to fly already?"

"Not quite," he says, shrugging. "I'm still learning. I'm using telekinesis now." And with his telekinesis, we zoom through the halls of the alien fortress, either plowing through Mogadorians, toasting them, or both. "For you, Emily, I could do this all day."

It isn't until we see sunlight that he picks up the pace, and we really fly. Mogadorians yell at us as we race by them, but I can't say that I care. We're almost there; the light is blinding. I start to get excited; my heart won't stop pounding. We're almost there. We're almost there!

But like every attempt before, no matter which Garde I'm with, Setrákus Ra walks forward from an adjourning hall. He flicks a lever, and a blue force field shields our exit. "Keep going," I plead to John. Although none of them have ever made it past the blue force field in all our attempts, that doesn't mean I don't know what happens; sometimes I don't, but this time, I do.

Worst case scenario: John will be nauseous for a few days, but we'll both be free. If that's the case, I'll drag him away. I can do that, surely, just as long as we get there.

But as soon as we reach the force field, everything goes dark. John is gone, and I'm in the chamber, suspended from the ceiling by thick steel chains. My stomach sinks. I nearly cry out when he strides into the room. He's hideous, but I can't look away from him. "Hello, Emily."

I hear the hissing noise and shut my eyes and grit my teeth. When the sickly goo meets my flesh, I scream.
