Pastor Nick was anxious.
No.
Scratch that.
Everyone was anxious.
Not only had some of the highest members of the Church of the Walls been arrested in the military-led coup and the Royal Assembly dismantled—but questions surfaced on the legitimacy of the Church itself.
Because the highest moral authority in the land was complicit in the murder of the most popular people within the Walls, fighting against defensive placements on the walls and stifling technological innovation to boot...
Who could they trust anymore?
However, this situation didn't come with only bad news, there was some good news, too.
In the wake of the civil unrest and subsequent war, a subset of the population turned to them for guidance in this time of chaos.
Something, anything to turn to to find some form of peace, and they turned to the Church.
Despite losing political power and some credibility, their power with the wider public was still strong. A simple rebranding and reorganization would do fine to fix their standing with the skeptics.
So when a large calling of the remaining members of the Church was called, Pastor Nick assumed nothing too much of it, despite his reservations and anxiety regarding the further safety of the Walls.
The new military government, or whatever it was branding itself to be now—Could the Church work with them as they had with the Royal Assembly?
The Church brought several benefits to whoever met its needs. It brought loyal followers who'd listen to the government's policies through it, spiritual fulfillment through its rituals, and, most importantly, wealth.
In its years of operation, the Church of the Walls had gathered significant wealth and political prestige, whether through high-profile donors from Wall Sina or the average working man in Wall Rose.
In the decades they had operated, they had gone from irrelevant to one of the main driving forces in politics.
In this power vacuum, they could potentially be the king-makers—literally.
They could turn any new regime into the old one if given enough time.
Any new regime would need the Church's political capital to garner support from the people in Wall Sina and, therefore, the people in Wall Rose. The Church also had connections with many rich individuals that it could leverage if it ever ran into any issues.
These were simply ideas the Church of the Walls could execute if the old nobility couldn't get back into power, which was very unlikely considering the current circumstances regarding the real Royal Family.
Approaching the magnificent circular church, which was situated in Stohess District, Pastor Nick could see his fellow pastors and high-ranking members entering.
Muttering small greetings and engaging in small talk, everyone slowly entered the church, making their way up the stairs and into the circular main chamber, the Nave, on the 3rd floor.
Here, regular church service would be served, where men and women from all classes would interlock their arms together and pray, reciting scripture and rituals. The interlocking of arms was meant to mimic the Walls and the Titans within them.
