Location: Lago, Marley
Year: 850
Time: Night

Marleyan street lamps cast long shadows across the narrow alleys as Yuki walked, her fingers curling tightly around her bag's thin strap.

There was not much to stress about besides... the normal things, but that's what a normal teenager like herself would worry about, nothing else.

Tsubanoki Yuki (椿木 雪) was nineteen and alone in Marley—a country that barely tolerated her kind.

Her eyes were sharp violet in colour and narrow, scanning each corner with an edge that wasn't fit for her age. And her blonde hair, tied up loosely, seemed almost out of place here.

Her family had always told her to stay hidden, to stay safe.

But tonight, that was the last thing on her mind.

She hadn't told anyone she'd moved to Marley, not even in the letters she still sent her family in Hizuru.

They'd all been cautious, each of them scattered across Hizuru-controlled lands after the blood tests came back.

The results had been a shock.

Partial Eldian.

That tiny strand of blood could mean life or death—freedom or slavery.

When they dug up her great-grandmother's memoirs, they said she had left the Eldian  Empire decades ago, fleeing the collapse, crossing the sea to Hizuru when everything back home had turned to dust. She said it was a miracle that she looked at least somewhat Asian and could blend in and settle down.

"Grandmother used to say she was lucky," Yuki muttered to herself.

She'd made it to Hizuru, but that didn't mean the family had escaped the hatred for their race.

Her great-grandmother had spent years keeping her down, trying to raise a family without attracting attention. And she had, more or less, succeeded. Yuki looked more Asian than she did Eldian.

The only way for someone to find out otherwise was if they got their hands on the blood tests, which she was sure that her family had hidden away somewhere safe.

Speaking of her parents.

Upon learning of this information, they had chosen the safer route, burying the truth and spreading it out—A smart move, but the separation was a massive burden, even two years later.

She could still remember their warnings—constant, attempting to be calm, but always so paranoid.

"Don't mention it to anyone," her mother had said. "They don't need to know. Keep safe, Yuki. The world doesn't like us."

It was supposed to keep her safe, but here she was in Marley.

She let a tight smile creep onto her face. Ironically, the idea of hiding hadn't kept her satisfied. She was meant for more than just blending in—something in her had always wanted to stand out.

And then, there was the offer.

A good salary, no questions asked, and enough to sustain herself and her family comfortably.
