The August night in Seoul was chilly, wrapping the city in a serene, tranquil blanket. As a foreigner on a one-year exchange program at Seoul National University, you found yourself engrossed in your studies, the looming exam season leaving no room for failure. Walking down the dimly lit road, your breath visible in the cold air, you felt a pang of hunger. The warm glow of a nearby convenience store beckoned, promising solace and sustenance.
"Already? I thought I just had dinner," you murmured to yourself, glancing at your phone. It was already 10 p.m. No wonder your stomach was protesting.
The familiar ding of the bell welcomed you as you stepped inside. The store was nearly deserted, save for a drowsy cashier behind the counter. Quietly, you made your way to the back, scanning the shelves for something to quell your hunger. Rounding a corner, you nearly collided with a petite figure.
"Sorry!" you exclaimed, stepping back and bowing quickly.
The girl you almost bumped into looked up, a small, amused smile dancing on her lips. Her striking blonde hair and sharp, pretty features were unmistakable. It was Winter, from aespa. You could hardly believe your eyes. What were the odds of encountering her here, in a convenience store, at this hour?
"No worries," Winter replied, her voice soft and melodious.
"I wasn't paying much attention either."
You felt a bit awkward, unsure of what to say. You didn't want to come off as a crazed fan, but the situation was too surreal to ignore.
"I, uh, didn't expect to see anyone here this late," you managed to say.
Winter chuckled, the sound light and enchanting.
"I didn't either. I was just craving some ramen after practice. What about you?"
"Pretty much the same," you admitted, relaxing a little.
"Late-night studying and all that. I'm Y/N, by the way."
"Nice to meet you, Y/N. Call me Minjeong," Winter said, extending a delicate hand. You shook it, feeling a pleasant jolt of electricity at the contact.
"Any recommendations for a good midnight snack?"
You glanced at the shelves, considering your options.
"Well, if you're in the mood for something warm, the spicy ramen here is pretty good. And maybe some kimbap to go with it?"
"Sounds perfect," Winter said with a nod.
"Mind if I join you?"
Your heart skipped a beat.
"Not at all," you replied, feeling your cheeks warm slightly.
You both grabbed your snacks and headed to the small seating area near the window. The cashier gave you a curious glance but said nothing. Settling in, the neon lights outside cast a soft glow through the window, giving the scene an almost magical feel.
"Y/N..., that name doesn't sound Korean. Are you from another country?" Winter asked as she unwrapped her ramen pack.
"Yeah, I've only been in Korea for about a semester. I'm an exchange student from Melbourne," you answered.
The atmosphere grew quiet for a moment, prompting you to keep the conversation going.
"So, you're an idol," you said, trying to keep the conversation casual.
"Must be exhausting, especially with late-night practices."
"It can be," Winter admitted, stirring her ramen.
"But I love what I do, so it's worth it. What about you? What are you studying?"
"Actuarial studies," you replied between bites of kimbap.
"It's challenging, but I enjoy it. Though sometimes, I wonder if I should've picked something less stressful."
"I signed up for business but ended up doing full math," you complained, eliciting a chuckle from her. Winter smiled, a knowing look in her eyes.
"I think we all have moments like that. But if it's something you're passionate about, it's worth the effort."
The conversation flowed effortlessly, surprising you with its ease. Winter was down-to-earth and genuinely interested in what you had to say. As the night wore on, you shared stories, laughed, and even joked about your late-night snack habits. It felt as though you had grown closer in a remarkably short time.
Before you knew it, the clock struck midnight. Winter glanced at her phone, a hint of regret in her eyes.
"I should probably get going. Early practice tomorrow."
"Yeah, I should head back too," you agreed, though you were reluctant to end the night.
You walked to the door together, stepping out into the crisp night air. Winter turned to you, her breath visible in the cold.
"It was really nice meeting you, Y/N-ah. Thanks for the company."
"Same here, noona," you replied with a smile.
"Maybe we'll run into each other again sometime."
"Maybe we will," Winter said, a twinkle in her eye.
"Jalja, Y/N-ah."
"Jalja, noona."
As she started walking away, you felt a surge of courage. This might be the only chance to connect with her again.
"Noona!" you called out.
Winter turned to face you.
"Wae?"
"Could I get your number? I wanna do this again sometime," you asked, smiling.
"Of course. I'd love to talk to you again," she chuckled, sharing her number with you.
As you watched her walk away, a warm feeling spread through you, more comforting than any ramen ever could be. That ordinary night had turned extraordinary with an unexpected encounter, leaving you with a sense of happiness and anticipation for what might come next. Little did you know, this chance meeting was just the beginning of something truly special.
