The cool night air of Shanghai kissed our skin as we walked side by side along the Bund, the gentle hum of the city echoing around us. The Huangpu River reflected the dazzling lights of the skyline, each building glittering like a jewel against the dark sky. The Pearl Tower stood tall in the distance, its lights shifting from soft pinks to vivid blues, casting a magical glow over the water.
I glanced over at Xiaoting, her face illuminated by the soft, golden street lamps that lined the promenade. She wore a light jacket, her hands tucked into the pockets, and her hair fell loosely over her shoulders, flowing slightly with the breeze. There was peacefulness in the air, an intimacy to the moment that neither of us wanted to break.
"Isn't it beautiful?" Xiaoting asked, her eyes sparkling as they scanned the view before us.
"Yeah," I replied, but my gaze stayed on her rather than the skyline.
"It really is."
She caught me staring and a playful smile tugged at her lips.
"You're supposed to be looking at the river, you know?"
I chuckled, looking away just enough to give her a teasing glance.
"I think I've found something better to look at."
She blushed at that, nudging me gently with her elbow.
"You're such a flirt."
I shrugged, grinning.
"Only for you."

We continued our walk, the quiet between us comfortable, as if the night itself was holding its breath. The sounds of the river lapping at the banks, the distant chatter of people passing by, the occasional ringing of a bicycle's bell—all seemed to fall into the background, leaving just the two of us in our own little world.
"Do you come here often?" I asked after a while, glancing over at her. The Bund seemed like a place where memories were made, a romantic spot where couples came to lose themselves in the beauty of the city.
"Sometimes," she said, her voice soft.
"Usually when I need to clear my head or think. There's something calming about walking by the river, isn't there?"
I nodded.
"It feels like the world slows down here, even though everything is so alive."
Xiaoting smiled, her fingers brushing against mine as we walked. For a moment, I hesitated, then gently reached out and intertwined our fingers. She didn't pull away—instead, her grip tightened, her touch warm and reassuring.
"This... feels nice," she whispered, her gaze dropping to our joined hands.
"It does," I agreed, my heart racing a little at the simplicity of the moment. It was amazing how something as small as holding her hand could make everything feel right.
As we neared the end of the promenade, we stopped by the stone railing overlooking the river. The lights danced across the water's surface, creating a shimmering path that stretched out in front of us. We stood there in silence for a few moments, just taking it all in.
"I love this city," Xiaoting said softly, her eyes still on the water. "But tonight, it feels even more special."
I looked over at her, my chest tightening in a way that was both comforting and exhilarating. "It's because we're here together."
She turned to me, her smile gentle but full of meaning.
"Yeah, I think so."
There was a warmth between us that went beyond the cool night air and the lights of Shanghai. It was something deeper, something that had been quietly growing over time. Standing there with her, fingers still entwined, I felt like nothing else in the world mattered.
Xiaoting tilted her head slightly, studying me with those bright, curious eyes of hers.
"You know, I wasn't sure what to expect tonight, but... I'm really glad you're here with me."
I smiled, feeling a sense of contentment wash over me.
"I wouldn't want to be anywhere else."
She took a step closer, her voice barely above a whisper.
"I've been wanting to tell you something for a while."
My heart skipped a beat, my mind racing with possibilities.
"What is it?"
Xiaoting bit her lip, her gaze dropping to the ground for a moment before she looked up at me again.
"I really like being with you. More than I thought I would."
I felt my pulse quicken, her words sending a wave of warmth through me.
"I feel the same way, Xiaoting."
Her smile grew wider, and she leaned in, her forehead resting lightly against mine.
"Then maybe we should stop pretending it's just a 'casual' thing."
I laughed softly, my free hand brushing a strand of hair from her face.
"I was never good at pretending anyway."
The air between us felt charged, not with tension, but with the quiet, undeniable realization that something had shifted. Something had deepened.
"Xiaoting," I murmured, my voice barely audible above the gentle lapping of the water. "I—"
But before I could finish, she closed the gap between us, her lips pressing softly against mine. The world seemed to blur around us, the lights of Shanghai fading into the background as we shared that quiet, intimate moment. It was tender, sweet, and filled with all the words we hadn't yet spoken.
When we finally pulled apart, she was still smiling, her eyes twinkling like the lights of the city.
"Happy birthday," she whispered, teasing.
I blinked, confused for a second before remembering the time. It had just turned midnight. I chuckled, pulling her into a tight hug.
"You remembered," I said while chuckling.
"Of course I did," she laughed softly.
"How could I forget?"
We stood there, holding each other close, the city of Shanghai around us alive with its usual energy. But for us, it was quiet, peaceful—a moment that felt like it belonged just to us.
As we held hands and continued our walk down the Bund, I couldn't help but hope that this moment never ends.
