The room was buzzing with low chatter as students shuffled into their seats. It was just another linear algebra tutorial, the kind of thing I'd been dreading all week. I found my usual spot near the back, slouched down in my chair as I skimmed through my notes. The fluorescent lights hummed above me, and the whiteboard at the front of the room was already filled with an intimidating maze of equations.

I sighed. Linear algebra wasn't exactly my strong suit, and today's topic—eigenvalues and eigenvectors—sounded like the final boss of all math problems. Just as I was about to dive into my textbook, the door creaked open, and in walked a girl I'd never seen before.

She was... stunning.

Her long, dark hair was pulled into a ponytail, a few loose strands framing her face. She had this cool, casual style—ripped jeans and an oversized sweater—and she carried herself with a sort of confidence that made her stand out. Her eyes scanned the room for a moment before they landed on the empty seat next to me.

I held my breath as she made her way over.

"Is this seat taken?" she asked, her voice light but clear.

I shook my head, trying to act casual.

"Nah, go ahead."

She smiled and sat down, pulling out her notebook and flipping to a fresh page. I tried to focus on the front of the room, where the tutor had just started going over some examples, but it was hard to concentrate with her so close.

A few minutes passed, and the TA started throwing out questions to the class. As expected, I had no idea what was going on. Then, out of nowhere, I heard her voice again.

"Do you get this stuff?"

I turned to find her looking at me, her pencil twirling idly between her fingers. Her eyes were bright, almost playful as if she already knew the answer to her question.

"Uh... not really," I admitted, laughing awkwardly.

"I mean, I kind of understand the basics, but once they start talking about eigen... whatever, I'm lost."

She laughed softly, her eyes crinkling at the corners.

"Eigenvalues and eigenvectors. Yeah, they're tricky. Do you mind if I show you?"

I blinked in surprise.

"You understand this stuff?"

She shrugged, her smile widening. "It's not too bad once you get the hang of it."

For the next twenty minutes, she explained the concepts in a way that made sense. She was patient, walking me through each step, breaking down the intimidating terms into something that felt... manageable. Every now and then, her shoulder would brush against mine as she leaned in to point something out, and I'd catch a whiff of her perfume—something light and floral. It was distracting in the best way possible.

By the time the tutorial ended, I felt like I actually understood a bit more. And it wasn't just because of the math.

"Thanks for the help," I said as we packed up our things.

"No problem," she replied, standing up and slinging her bag over her shoulder.

"I'm Yeji, by the way."

"Y/N," I said, smiling as I zipped up my backpack.

"Do you, uh... come to these tutorials often?"

She raised an eyebrow, clearly catching onto my awkward attempt at small talk.

"Not really. I just transferred into the class last week, so this is my first one."

"Well, lucky me," I said, then quickly added, "I mean, lucky for me that you sat next to me. You know, because you're good at this stuff."

She grinned, clearly amused.

"Lucky you, huh?"

I rubbed the back of my nape, feeling a bit embarrassed.

"Yeah. Lucky me."

We walked out of the classroom together, the afternoon sun filtering through the windows and casting a warm glow on the hallway.

"You know," Yeji said as we reached the entrance, "if you ever need more help with linear algebra, I wouldn't mind studying together."

My heart skipped a beat.

"Really?"

"Sure," she said with a casual shrug. "It's more fun than studying alone. Plus, it looks like you could use a study buddy."

I chuckled, relieved she didn't find me completely hopeless.

"Yeah, I could. Thanks."

She stopped at the door, turning to face me fully.

"Let's meet up tomorrow? Maybe grab coffee first?"

I blinked, caught off guard by her forwardness but definitely not complaining.

"Sounds like a plan."

"Cool," she said with a smile that seemed to light up the whole hallway.

"It's a date then."

As she walked away, I stood there for a moment, watching her disappear into the crowd of students. My mind was racing, replaying the last hour over and over. I couldn't help but smile.

A date. With Yeji.

Linear algebra wasn't so bad after all.
