5 - "How did we end up here?"

30 minutes after the siren blared, and the Med-Jacks took Alby away, we once again gathered around the Box for the third day in a row. Everyone seemed annoyed - they had just trained Luke, Calum was a day behind because he was shucking salty and beat Gally up, and now a new greenie. And Thomas was being Thomas. "He's either the bravest shank I've ever met, or the most stupid" Minho said earlier.

"Why don't you open the doors this time, Newt?" Gally said. "That way if we get another greenie like Calum, you can be punched in the face."

Newt shrugged, keeping the same facial reaction he always has. He opened the doors, and we all saw a guy with curly, unruly hair and sharp facial features and dimples hugging his knees in a corner. Luke was standing beside me, and I heard him gasp again. "Luke?" I asked.

"God, I know him. Why do I know him?"

I took his arm and led him away from the group, especially Gally. Gally had his attention on the new greenie anyway. "I know him too. Don't tell me it, but do you know his name?"

"Yeah, I do. Do you?!"

"Yeah. On the count of three, let's say it at the same time," I said.

"Okay."

"One."

"Two," he said.

"Three," I said.

"Ashton," we both said at the same time. "Woah."

I brushed my hair back with my hand. "This is really weird."

"Yeah. How do we know him?"

"I don't know!" I snapped. "This isn't normal, Luke. Just pretend you don't know him. I mean, Calum doesn't know us, and we knew his name, so Ashton probably won't remember us."

"You knew Calum's name too?"

"Yeah. That's why I said this isn't normal," I said. I really hoped I wasn't this annoying when I was the green bean. "Just be normal. Okay?"

Luke nodded, and bit his lip ring. I turned away and went back to the group, because I didn't want the others to notice us gone and question us, and because him biting his lip ring was way too hot.

"Newt?" I asked, when we were working in the gardens.

"Yeah?"

"Has anyone recognized someone else in the Glade, ever?" I questioned.

"Um," Newt said, looking up from his work and thinking. "No, never."

"Oh." Shuck.

"Unless someone went through the Changing. Like, Gally recognizes Thomas from the Changing. Ben recognized Thomas. I don't know if you heard, but Alby recognizes Thomas too."

Well, Luke and I definitely have not gone through the Changing.

Newt looked at me. "Why do you ask? Have you recognized of the greenies this week? It is weird that we've gotten a new one every day."

"Uh..." Shuck, I can't lie to that face. The way Newt looked at me, I knew I could never lie to him.

"Forget it. Thomas is the main issue right now," Newt said.

At dinner, Luke joined me at one of the tables. I was sitting alone, and hoped that Newt would sit by me. At this point, I could just forget that happening. "Have you seen Ashton much today?"

I glared at Luke before I ate another bite. "Call him greenie, you shuck face. I told you to be shucking normal."

"Fine, have you seen the shucking greenie much today?"

I rolled my eyes, shaking my head. "Now you're trying too hard. Let the Glader slang come naturally."

"Will you just answer my question?" I could hear the annoyance in Luke's voice.

"No, I haven't seen the greenie much today. Have you? He should be job training, especially since he didn't flip out like Calum did," I explained.

Ashton then joined us at the table with his food. "I'm just going to eat with you mates."

"Oh look," Luke said, looking at me sarcastically. "It's the greenie."

"You're such a shuck-face," I said to him.

Ashton looked at us, and leaned in. "Hey. No one told me your names, but I'm sure I know them - I've seen you both before."

I looked at him. "What?"

"You're Jenessa and Luke. I don't remember anything else - but I know I was close to you both," Ashton said.

"Do you..." Luke was thinking. "Do you know that one Asian?"

"What, Minho?"

"No, the other one."

"Oh, Calum's not Asian," Ashton said, laughing.

Luke's eyes widened, and he looked at me, then looked back at Ashton. "You knew Calum too?"

"Yeah." Ashton shook his head, then ate a bite of Frypan's mystery meat. "How did we end up here?"

Luke slammed his fork down in frustration. "There it is again - I remember another shucking song!"

"What?" Ashton asked.

"I'm going to sing something," Luke said, "I'm wondering if you'll remember it... how did we end up talking, in the first place? You said you liked my Cobain shirt. Now we're walking, back to your place -"

"You're telling me how you loved that song about living on a prayer," Ashton joined in, smiling.

"I'm pretty sure that we're halfway there," Luke sang.

"And when I wake up next to you, I wonder how -" Ashton continued singing.

"Okay shanks," I said, "this isn't a shucking musical."

"Wow," Ashton said, "way to ruin the moment, Jen."

"Seriously? Gally is going to shucking hear. This isn't normal to remember stuff like this," I said.

"Oh, I remember a lot more," Ashton said. "Luke, we were in a band, and Jen, you're my sister."
