"Hey - oh. Oh."

I opened my eyes to feel Newt's arm around me tightly, our bodies touching. We slept together again in the deadheads. I looked up to see Chuck embarrassed, looking at us. I gently nudged Newt awake.

"I didn't mean to..."

"No, Chuck. It's okay," I said.

"It's early," Newt said, his voice sounding really hot from just waking up. "Bloody hell, is Gally looking for us or something? Is it a shucking sin to sleep out here?"

Ashton jogged up to Chuck, and looked at us. "Oh good, you found them."

"What?" I asked.

"Everyone's up early to meet at the Doors when they open," Ashton explained, looking especially at me. As if judging me for sleeping with Newt last night.

I was feeling kind of hopeful this morning. Thomas knows how to survive out there - so maybe they were standing on the other side of the Doors, waiting for them to open. "Come on, they should open any minute!" Chuck exclaimed.

He seemed too excited. I mean, what if they were actually dead?

I slowly got up, and so did Newt.  "Hey, walk with me," Ashton said to me.

"Yeah, so Gally won't interrogate you about last night," Chuck added.

Interrogate. "Is Calum still in the Slammer?" I asked, now walking with Ashton.

"Yeah." Ashton's voice was solid, and emotionless. "So I guess you've already moved on from Luke."

"What the klunk," I exhaled. "What?"

"You've already moved on from Luke, you being with Newt."

"Okay," I said. "Luke and I had nothing. Okay? I like Newt - I have since I first got here."

"You and Luke had nothing, yet you kissed?" I looked at Ashton when he said that. "Yeah, he told me about that." He shook his head disapprovingly. "I remember some things, that I need to tell you. But now's obviously not the time."

We now joined the others at the Doors of the Maze. It was less than 30 seconds later when the awful sounding shifting started. I hated hearing it, it was so uncomfortable for my ears. I stood on my toes, standing in the back, being the shortest one in the Glade. Some boys were only slightly taller than me, and I looked for a window between heads. When the Doors opened to their full length, there was nothing in the path.

Luke and Thomas were really dead.

They were gone.

Forever.

"That's what I thought," Gally said, voice firm. He sounded sad, but I knew it was an act. "We've lost two Gladers. We cannot afford to lose any more - everyone continue to work. Baggers, I need you to free Calum so he can work today. If he acts up, send him back to the Slammer." One by one, the Gladers left. Gally stayed, watching everyone go to work. Newt joined me, and stayed by my side. He put his hand on my back, and pulled me into a hug.

I couldn't think.

Before I knew it, Newt, Gally, and I were the only ones left by the Doors. "Come on," Gally ordered. "Back to work."

"Gally," Newt said.

"Newt," Gally returned. "Ask your girlfriend - the Slammer isn't a great shuck place to be."

I felt like a part of me had died. And I didn't know why - I hated Luke. Why was I feeling this way? Why did this hurt so bad? Newt let go of the hug, and I backed away, not looking at either of them. I backed up against the Wall, and slid down to sitting. "Throw me in the Slammer tonight, I just need to mourn today," I said.
