"Jenessa."
I opened my eyes, and found myself in the same position - back against the dirt wall, me hugging my knees. Then I remembered everything - why I was here, why I was hugging my knees. Why I had dried tears on my cheeks.
Luke and Thomas were stuck in the Maze.
I looked up to see darkness, but a torch that shone bright enough for me to see Newt's face. "Gally sent me to get you. He wants to talk to you."
I looked at Calum hesitantly. He's been in the Slammer forever, and here I am, already getting out. But maybe I'd go back in. He curled up, sleeping on the floor. When he'd wake up, I won't be here.
I followed Newt out of the Slammer and to the Homestead, to one of the rooms. The Baggers closed the door behind me, leaving Newt outside. "Sit down," Gally ordered to me, and I obeyed. The chair wobbled, but I ignored it.
"Have you thought about things while you were in the Slammer? Gonna tell me the whole shuck truth now?"
I wiped my face of the dried tears, and looked at him. "Sure."
Gally walked over to me, and leaned on the table in front of me. "You look like you've been through hell." I couldn't help but stair at his eyebrows. They were so intriguing. I don't think I've ever even looked into his eyes, just his eyebrows. If you asked me what color Gally's eyes were, I couldn't tell you. "Why is that?"
"I've been in the Slammer all day?" I said.
Gally stood back up, and started pacing around. "You'll go straight back there after we're done if you don't lose the shucking attitude." He looked at me. "If things go well, you can go and run along with your little boyfriend."
"What?"
"Newt, isn't he your boyfriend? Or is it Luke, which one is it today?"
"I don't have a boyfriend," I answered.
"If you tell me enough, I'll let you go free. I won't put you in the Slammer unless you deserve it," Gally compromised.
I exhaled. I mean, Luke was probably dead anyway. Why not just be honest? "You were right. Luke is - was, in the Maze today with Thomas. Luke told me, but didn't tell me much. All he said was that Thomas thought he found a lead to a way out of here, and Minho was too scared so Luke went instead." Tears swelled up in my eyes. "Thomas probably didn't know the Maze well enough without Minho, and they probably got lost on their way back.."
"I think you know why we got four greenies back to back, every day. You seem close to them, and no one likes the greenies. Ever."
"I swear, I just know their names. I just know they all seem familiar...but I don't know why. I think I might have known them before we all came here. But I don't know why they were back to back. I also hate Luke, and I don't know why. And Calum hates all of them...but if you want more information, you should ask them."
"But I'm asking you. What do you know?"
"I just know what they tell me. Calum thinks Luke and I are meant to be together. Luke thinks the four are in a band, and they keep remembering their shuck songs. And Ashton thinks we're siblings. But I don't remember any of that. I don't know any more." Gally stared at me, as if I was still hiding something. "Luke is probably dead by now, Gally. It's not worth lying anymore to you."
"Just go," he said. "You're free."
The Baggers opened the door for me, and I walked outside. Newt was sitting against the wall, and when he saw me, he immediately stood up. "So?"
"I'm free."
"What did you do to be free?" Newt asked, his face filled with concern.
"I just told him the shuck truth. I'm an open book now." I began walking towards the kitchen, Newt beside me. "I'm going to eat something, and take a shower. I feel like I have bathed in klunk."
Frypan gave me the dinner leftovers, and I sat down, Newt sitting across from me. As I ate with my right hand, he reached across the table, holding my left hand. "It's going to be okay, Jenessa."
I looked at him. "Newt, why are you being so nice to me? You know I kissed Luke. And," my voice cracked. I was an emotional mess, "I'm so sorry. You must think I'm a slut."
"No, I don't think that." Newt exhaled. "I'm just jealous of Luke. You may hate him now, but you two had something before you came here. That gives you a connection in the Glade. I can't compete with that."
"Kissing Luke didn't feel right, but it felt familiar," I said. "I hate him - and I don't know why. I think something happened before we came here."
"Like you broke up?" Newt asked.
"Maybe."
"You know, Thomas has survived a night in the Maze before - he might be able to again."
"But what if something happened? What if one of them got stung?" I asked. Newt didn't say anything. Probably because he knew I was probably right.
