Tisha pov
I was sitting in my living room, flipping through a magazine, when the phone rang. I picked up, surprised to hear Berry Gordy on the other end. I hadn't talked to Berry since I left Motown in 1979. My heart skipped a beat as I wondered what he wanted.
"Hello, Tisha. It's Berry. How have you been?" he asked, his voice warm but with a hint of urgency.
"Berry! It's been a long time. I've been good, just keeping busy. How about you?" I replied, trying to keep my curiosity in check.
"I'm doing well, thank you. Listen, I have a something important to discuss with you. Can you come down to Motown Records? It's about the Motown anniversary next year," Berry said.
I agreed, my mind racing with possibilities. When I arrived at Motown Records, memories flooded back. The familiar smell of the studio, the pictures on the walls, it all felt like home. Berry greeted me with a smile and led me to his office.
"Tisha, I'm planning a big anniversary celebration for Motown next year, in 1983. I want it to be a grand event, and I would love for you and your sisters to perform," Berry explained.
I hesitated, thinking about how Akrice and Lapetra were no longer with the group Shades of Love. "Berry, I'm not sure. Akrice and Lapetra aren't with us anymore, and it wouldn't feel the same without them," I said, my voice tinged with uncertainty.
Berry nodded, understanding my concerns. "I get that, Tisha. It's a big ask, but I think it would mean a lot to the fans. And there's something else I need your help with,"he said, pausing a moment.
"What is it?" I asked, curious about this additional request.
"I need you to convince Michael to perform as well. He doesn't want to do it because he thinks he's been on tv too much lately," Berry explained.
I sighed, thinking about how difficult it would be to convince Michael to do something he wasn't comfortable with. "Berry, that's a tough one. Michael is pretty set in his ways. But I'll try," I promised, though I wasn't sure how I would manage it.
Berry smiled, grateful for my willingness to help. "Thank you, Tisha. I know it's a lot to ask, but I believe you can do it," he said.
As I left Berry's office, my mind was already racing with ideas on how to approach Michael. I knew it wouldn't be easy, but for Berry and for the fans, I was willing to give it my best shot.
The next day I decided to give Michael a call. As the phone rang, I rehearsed what would I say, hoping to find the right words to convince him.
"Hello?" Michael's voice came through, sounding a bit weary.
"Hey Michael, it's Tisha. How are you?" I asked, trying to keep the conversation light.
"I'm alright, just been busy", he replied.
I took a deep breath. "Michael, I spoke with Berry the other day. He wants us to perform at the Motown anniversary concert next year."
There was a pause on the other end. "Tisha, you know I've been on TV a lot lately. I don't think it's a good idea."
"I understand, Michael. But this concert is more than just another performance. It's a celebration of everything we've achieved together. It's about our legacy," I said hoping to appeal his sense of nostalgia.
Michael sighed. "I get that, Tisha. But I'm not sure if I'm ready for it."
"Michael, think about the fans, the people who have supported us all these years. They would love to see us together again, even if it's just for one night," I urged.
There was another pause, longer this time. "Alright, Tisha. I'll think about it. But no promises."
"That's all I ask, Michael. Just give it some thought," I said feeling a glimmer of hope.
As I hung the phone, I felt a sense of relief. It wasn't a definite yes, but it was a step in the right direction. Now, I just had to hope that Michael would come around.
