THE CAMPFIRE SIZZLED THE EMBERS TWIRLING IN THE AIR. the camp was quiet, the only noise filling the air being both the sizzling of the fire and ricks low voice, quiet and gruff, carrying through the silent camp, everyone listening to his words. the girls head rested against her fathers bicep, her arms tight around wrapped tightly around his arm, a small voice in the back of her head telling her he'd vanish in thin air if she let him go. natalia knew it wasn't real, that he wasn't going to go anywhere, yet her mind didn't let up. it was irrational, and she knew that, but it did bring her comfort being able to hold onto her father, silently silencing the voice in her head that told her he would vanish. having him close again felt fake, like none of it was actually happening. last she had seen of her father, he was in a coma, doctors unsure if he would pull through or not, they had been told to prepare for the worst. rick spoke softly to the group. his voice low, and practically putting natalia to sleep. her eyes struggled to stay open. he told them what he had seen, when he'd woken in the hospital. it made natalia realize he truly had gotten lucky, he could've died when the power cut out and then once again when he left the hospital. unbeknownst to the virus that had spread, he could've gotten bitten or ripped apart. that alone, scared the life out of natalia. yet she forced herself to look on the bright side, thanking what ever god was listening for keeping him safe, thankful that somehow, by some miracle, he had found them.
her eyes danced to her mother, lori leaned against ricks free arm. her lips pursed and eyes filled with both fear and relief, looking through the red and orange flames, towards shane who stared blankly at the flames. the emotions clashed against one another, making her eyes swell. natalia wished she didn't know what her mother could be fearful of, she wished she was as clueless as carl was, yet she wasn't, and neither was lee, the two smarter then they looked, and not as stupid as their parents believed they were. the two paid far more attention to their parents, and they'd noticed when the two would sneak off, coming back looking disheveled. it disgusted natalia to no end, thinking of her mother being with her fathers best friend had her feeling sick to her stomach. especially now, since her father had returned, alive and well. she hadn't brought it up before, but now, she wasn't sure how long she could stay quiet about it for. carls head rested in his fathers lap, his eyes barley open. his face was relaxed, his eyes filled with content. the flames danced wildly, painting his skin as they twirled in the wind. rick's voice was raspy and horse as he spoke. his eyes dancing between each member of the group, his jaw slack and a new sense of relief in his eyes as he held his family close to him. having her father back, being in his arms gave natalia a new sense of protection."disoriented, fear confusion all those things, but disoriented. that comes closest." rick told, his eyes scanning those who sat listening to what he was saying. his words had come out slow, his mind racking for what could properly explain what he felt when he woke, to the best of his abilities, unsure which words could best describe what he had felt. "words can be a mile of things, sometimes they come short." dale commented, taking a drink from his cup before setting it down. only earning a slow nod from rick.
