THE AIR REEKED OF THE BURNING SMELL OF DEATH. the pungent smell unable to be ran from. it remained thick in the air, trickling into their noses, clinging to their clothing. bodies were everywhere, both civilian bodies and military bodies. some laying on the ground, others atop the tanks, laying over the bags of sand, none the less, the decaying bodies were everywhere. no matter the direction natalia looked, she could see a body. the sound of crows screeching out echoed in the heavy silence, the birds ate at the dead decaying bodies, their beaks greedily picking at the decaying flesh for some sort of food. flys swarmed them, buzzing loudly as they settled on the grey bodies. sand bags were stacked up in attempts to make barricades, though it was  clear that they didn't do anything to help the living. military vehicles sat still, abandoned and left to rust. stray used bullets littered the ground, the shell casing making small noises as they rolled along the ground. the sky was beginning to darken, the sunset appearing and the hues of colors painted the sky, a low rumble of thunder echoing across the sky. natalia tried to not breath, the mere smell of the air having bile rise in her throat, it had her stomach churning in the worst way possible. she did her best to ignore the bodies they passed, trying not to look at the decaying faces that each had a bullet hole through their foreheads. rick held a finger to his lips, using his hand he gently motioned for the group to quietly follow after him. making any noise could have the dead swarming them, they were far to close to atlanta, and nightfall was just around the corner. natalia quietly followed her father, stepping over the bodies that laid on the ground, attempting not not step on the flesh.she looked silly, stepping and raising her leg so she wouldn't land on the bodies. it was laughable, almost. perhaps if it wasn't bodies she was stepping over it would've been funny, laughable even, but it wasn't. she was stepping over people who had lost their lives, there was nothing funny about it.

finally the group had reached the building, it didn't look promising. with the bodies that laid everywhere and the shutters that sealed the windows shut, it looked abandoned. it had been a long shot, they were all aware of that since the beginning, and it had proved to be futile. natalia felt helpless, if the CDC was overrun then fort benning would be too. both places would've been the first to fall, they would be the places people would go to when the world went to hell. the sky was significantly darker, the sunset slowing disappearing. the soft orange color barley poked out from behind the trees, thought it too, was setting. rick clenched his jaw, harshly beating his fist against the metal shutters. natalia flinched at the noise, her eyes wide as she looked to her father before looking around them. the sound would surely attract the dead, it was only a matter of time before they were swarmed. natalia gently grabbed onto carls hand, squeezing softly she stayed close to her mother, holding her brother tightly against her front. natalia shared a fearful look with her mother, neither of them truly knowing what to do. "therese no body here!" tdog looked to the grimes man, tdog adjusting his grip on the shot gun he clutched. rick pursed his lips as he looked to the man. "then why are these shutters down?" rick questioned with furrowed brows, his tongue poked the inside of his cheek as tdog only shrugged in response. low snarls filled the air, natalia looked in the direction where she could the dead limping towards them. a lump settled in her throat, her hand squeezed carls tighter.
