THE WATER WAS cold, it clashed with the heat wave that georgia was facing. yet it did relieve some of the discomfort they felt, cooling their red sun kissed skin. it gave a moment of relief, yet it counted for something, and it was better then nothing. her hands held tightly onto a basket filled of dirty clothes. the clothes ranging with who they belonged to, one of her chores was helping with laundry, weather that meant cleaning or helping fold and pass out. she sat atop an large rock, the roughness scratching at her pants. the laundry basket laid beside her, the clothes threatening to spill out due to the height of the clothes.

the women in the group had been given more work than the men, and that was clear to everyone. sure, the men did their fair share, yet it was mainly the women who kept the camp running. shane could be splashing around in the water, carl jumping around and laughing as the walsh man splashed the cold water at the grimes boy. it made natalia happy to see her brother acting as normal as he possibly could, despite what the world had turned into. natalia glanced over her shoulder, rolling her eyes at the man who stood leaning against the old car watching them do laundry. ed was carols husband, a mean, pudgy man. he always had a comment to make, making snide remarks beneath his breath. the group wasn't blind to what he'd been doing to carol, yet nothing had been done to try and stop it.

natalia had attempted to help carol once, pull her away from the man who had been dragging her towards their tent. it only angered the man more, and natalia was met with being shoved onto the ground. she knew what ed was doing was wrong, but she wasn't able to do anything to stop it. when she tried to help their friend, natalia believed it only made things worse, for the next time she seen carol she had twice as many marks as she normally would've. it made natalia feel worse then she already did for the woman. "i'm starting to question the division of work." jackie spoke, breaking the silence as she took a seat close to natalia. the grimes girl wasn't very familiar with the woman, sure she'd spoken with her a few times, but she never had gotten quite close to her.

natalia nodded softly, her tongue poking the inside of her cheek as she glanced to the woman. most of the women sat around the edge of the quarry, each hunched over, scrubbing clothes against the wash boards. the position made natalia back ache, her shoulders burn and her lips form a scowl. "how did the wemon end up doing the hard labor?" she questioned, looking between the different women who shrugged softly. each simply wanting to get done with washing the laundry, it was one of the chores they hated the most. "the world ended didn't you get the memo?" amy questioned, earning fits of laughter from the others. it was rather funny, natalia softly shook her head as her laughter died down. the short end of the stick had in fact been given to the women of the group, forcing themselves to busy with keeping things moving smoothly.
