THE SUN WAS BARLEY OUT, DAWN HAD ONLY JUST APPROACHED. the colors mixing in the sky didn't reflect the current state everyone was in. they each were grieving, the bodies of their dead friends were everywhere. with chunks bitten out of them, their eyes a milky white color, and their skin a sickly pale. though it wasn't just their friends bodies that littered the camp, walker bodies too, were everywhere. with bullet holes in their skulls, and blood seeping from their heads. it was a sight for sore eyes, one that made natalia shiver. the night prior had been gruesome, it had taken a toll on everyone who remained. which wasn't a lot, more then half of the group had been killed by the dead, ripped to shreds by the walkers jaws. no one had slept a wink that night, everyone far to scared to dare to rest. attempting to process what they'd witnessed, the screams still echoed in natalia ears. she could faintly still hear the snarls that the dead emitted, she could feel the goosebumps on her skin. they'd learned what jim had dug the graves for. he had remembered his dream, the dark dream that turned out to be true. while everyone began to bury their friends and loved ones, natalia sat within her tent, sitting beside her brother who was slowly drifting off on his cot. sophia laid on natalia's empty cot, the blonde girl was curled up, natalia's blankets pulled close to the girls chin, soft snores escaping the childs' lips.

natalia had promised both of their mothers she'd watch them, keep them safe. they needed sleep, it was clear as day they were both exhausted. purple bags resided beneath their eyes as they fought to stay awake. both fearful of falling asleep, and no amount of reassurance would help the two drift off quicker. natalia sat in between the cots, her knees drawn to her chest, and her chin resting atop her knee caps. her hair fell onto the sides of her face, creating a curtain so the two children couldn't see the distress written on her face. natalia wanted to be strong, she desperately did, but she wasn't. she was petrified, her eyes wide with fear and her teeth chewing on her bottom lip. she'd only seen something like last night once, it had been on the highway and it had sent her spiraling. she could still vividly remember the sight, and she was sure the sight from last night would linger for as long as she lived. carls eyes fluttered open, looking to his older sister who remained unmoving. "are we safe now?" carl whispered softly, his eyes full of fear and curiosity, the two emotions harshly clashed within his eyes. his young voice filled with sleep. natalia glanced to her brother, her eyes dancing to sophia who slept with her back turned to them. the teen bit into her lip, raising her hands she tucked her hair behind her ears before nodding her head, a weak hum escaping her lips. "the others are back. they have guns, and they know what they're doing. they'll keep us safe." natalia gently told her brother, nodding firmly at the boy who pursed his lips. no amount of guns would give her the feeling of security. no amount of convincing would make her believe they were truly safe, because they weren't. how could they if in every direction they looked in only held the dead. she hated feeling small, like she couldn't control what happened next; but she couldn't. "i'm scared, nat." carl quietly told, shaking his head at the girl gave him a weak, forced smile, forced and full of pain. "don't be. we're gonna be okay. dads gonna keep us all safe." natalia gently told the boy, her back leant into the tent wall.
