I was a Waterbender. The second one in the team. I wasn't very close with the group at first. I just tagged along because of Katara.

I was a mix of Earth kingdom and Southern Water tribe, but was born in Ba Sing Se.

Not many Waterbenders there, let alone masters, so I was elated when I met Katara.

We hit it off immediately, sharing experiences of not having a mentor and being singular in a large group.

I asked Katara about joining the group and to say she was excited was an understatement.

She was bouncing at the thought of getting to teach another Waterbender of Southern heritage.

I was younger than Katara, so she became like a sister figure to me over time.

Sokka took a liking to me and decided to, very graciously, teach me how to throw a boomerang. He was like my father, but more accepting.

Toph was... Toph. I admired her greatly, but she didn't really reciprocate those feelings for a while. I had to earn her respect.

After that, we slowly became closer. Now, we make inside jokes on the regular. Jokes only we understand. We have a nice little thing going on.

Aang was great, but something always felt off about the way he acted. Not just around me, but around everyone. I could tell he was in constant pain, but he brushed me off whenever I asked about it.

I eventually connected the dots. He was still sore about being the last Airbender alive. He was still hurt. That made sense though. I decided not to prod him about it any further out of pure respect. If I went through that, I would go insane.

Me and the gaang went through thick and thin together. We became closer. I viewed them as the kind of people I would give my life for in a heartbeat.

I watched Aang get shot full of lightning. That was... the worst feeling ever. The feeling of complete and utter helplessness. I was new to the gaang, but I felt their pain. My heart ached for them, and for Aang.

I helped Aang recover. It was the least I could do. To do so, Katara taught me the most valuable skill I would ever have a hold of.

Healing.

I had also developed feelings for Aang. I had to deal with constantly feeling flustered around him. That was a bit inconvenient at times.

Anyways, we were in the Fire nation, Sokka had picked some random forest for us to camp out in. We were currently sat around a campfire telling spooky ghost stories. I don't know why. It just kinda... happened?

"And they knew... the blade of Wing-Fun was haunted! Oooh-Aaaahh!"

Sokka had just reached the climax of the spooky story he was telling, but it wasn't very frightening.

I yawned. It was dark and I was getting tired. I leant on Katara absent-mindedly.

"I think I liked 'the man with a sword for a hand' better." Aang commented from his spot on the ground.

"Water tribe slumber parties must stink." Toph said with probably the most bored look on her face of us all.

"No wait," Katara started, gently moving me off of her.
"I've got one, and this is a true Southern Water tribe story."

"Is this one of those 'a friend of my cousin, new some guy this happened to' stories?" Sokka questioned, sitting down and crossing his legs with an unimpressed look on his face.

"No. It happened to mom."

Oh. Okay. That caught my attention.

I snapped out of my sleepy daze and sat up straight, eager to hear this story.
