WHILST VENUS SLEPT IN THE backseat of the jeep, Pumpkin fast asleep on her chest. Layla drove through the night to towards their destination. With Steven sitting in the passenger seat, his eyes constantly looking over his shoulder at Venus, making sure that she was still breathing. No matter how many times she had assured him that she was okay, the sight of so much blood made Steven feel terrified. Even Layla had noticed his anxiety radiating off of him.

"We can't lose more time. Harrow must be headed towards the tomb," Layla stated. She glanced briefly at Steven, spotting his attention on the woman in the backseat, "She's going to be fine, Steven."

Steven sighed but nodded, but the fear still gnawed at him as he turned to face the front.

Layla sighed, "Look, if he is, we're gonna need Marc, yeah?"

Steven glanced at the side view mirror, spotting Marc in the reflection.

He nodded, "Exactly. See, she gets it."

"No."

"No?" Layla asked.

Steven shook his head, "No. See, the thing is, we made a deal, Marc and I, that when he's done with Khonshu, he would disappear for good."

Marc glared at Steven, "But that deal didn't involve you getting Venus, Layla and us killed, did it? That's not gonna fly with me."

"You guys made a deal?" Venus' questioned caused Steven to jump in surprise. Looking over his shoulder and watching as she sat up in the backseat, her eyes shutting in pain as he reached towards the back to help her, she let his hands touch her as he helped her from her lying position, knowing that it would make him feel more at ease if he could feel that she was really there and that she was okay and breathing. Her pulse beating.

Although her wound was still healing, she felt her body strength coming back. The sleep having helped the healing process by speeding it up and now the wound was merely scabbed over.

He passed her Marc's bag, letting her choose yet another shirt to change into now that the one she wore was, yet again, soaked in the red substance.

"So he would disappear out of our lives and you didn't think we should be made aware of that?" Layla asked, looking annoyed at Marc's secretive behaviour. After their divorce he promised that even though they weren't together or in love, that he would still be there for her. He had been the only person there after the death of her father, she knew she couldn't lose him from her life. So to know he was ready to just disappear – this time forever – felt like a punch to the gut.
