POV :~ KSHITIJ
I really don't know what happened last night and what triggered her. I know something triggers her, something obviously related to the fact that she is losing her mother and the only one she had on the name of family since she was born.
Because the last time it happened, was when I had asked about her mother's health and she had cried her heart out, then her body became numb as she slept like she had taken sleeping pills to succumb to her sleep.
I didn't realize the 'numb' part then, I only realized it last night when she didn't budge even for a second no matter how much I shook her or carried her in my arms, all the way from the cruise to our hotel this morning.
I was so scared that I ended up calling Sayesha — because I know she is more closer to her than Priti, and asked her if my wife used to take some medication and all.
She said 'no.'
I called my family doctor and tried to grab as much information as I could after telling her what happened last night.
And she had spoken about the possibilities of her condition, giving me a deeper understanding of what might be going on with her. The doctor explained that the intense grief from knowing her mother was in the final stages of cancer might have triggered a severe emotional response.
This kind of reaction wasn't uncommon in individuals who were anticipating the loss of a loved one. The brain, she said, has its ways of coping, and sometimes, it shuts down temporarily to protect itself from overwhelming pain.
She also mentioned the possibility of anticipatory grief. Knowing that her mother, the only family she had grown up with and known her whole life, would eventually die was an immense emotional burden. This pre-loss grief could lead to emotional and psychological distress, causing episodes of numbness and detachment as her mind tried to prepare for the inevitable.
Another point she raised was the potential for depressive episodes. The looming loss of her mother could lead to deep bouts of sadness, making her feel overwhelmed and emotionally exhausted. The fact that she cried so intensely before going numb suggested that her emotions were still very raw and unresolved.
She advised me to be patient and supportive, to create an environment where my wife felt safe to express her feelings. Encouraging her to talk about her mother, to share her memories and emotions, could be therapeutic.
She also suggested we might consider professional counseling if her episodes became more frequent or severe, as a therapist could provide the tools and strategies she needed to cope with her grief healthily.
Seeing her like this made me realize how fragile she could be.
I gently brushed a strand of hair from her face, my heart aching for her loss and the emotional turmoil she was enduring.
"Wake up, moon," I whispered against her neck.
It's late in the morning. I've already freshened up and she is still dozing. She needs to have breakfast.
"Kritika," I caressed her cheek, "Wake up, baby."
She stirred slightly, possibly out of her numbness. I need to make sure she remembers nothing because if she had an 'episode', as doctor said, she'll probably herself remember nothing about the fact that she cried so hard last night.
Her eyes fluttered open slowly, and she rubbed her hands over her eyes.
"Good morning, moon."
She smiled, radiantly. "Good morning, baby."
