THE JOURNALIST IN 5 YEARS

Heavier. Numb in almost all parts of my body, but it all hurts.

Parang nahihiwalay ako sa katawan ko. Parang hindi na ito yung katawan ko.

" Mom..." mahina kong tawag.

Agad siyang lumapit. I was not surprised.

It was so obvious how tired she was, from staying up all night watching over me; but she still smiled at me.

" Gising ka na, anak," she said.

I didn't bother asking.

I'm so tired of asking, and somehow I got used to it.

A nurse and a doctor entered my room. This scene is familiar, so familiar.

" Ma'am, we need to insert a central line today," sabi ng nurse. " We'll be inserting the central line today. She needs direct access for the medication and nutrition. Hindi na po siya makakakain ng maayos. Sereia needs a more direct access point-for medications, blood draws, and TPN "

TPN. Total parenteral nutrition. I knew what it meant. I had read about it during one of  my better days, when I still thought I had time to prepare for this. Now, I couldn't even lift my hand to hold my mother's hand.

My mom just nodded.

They sterilized the area on my chest. The cold sting of antisepetic burned my skin. I winced. A nurse held my shoulder down.

" Relax lang po, Miss Sereia. It will be a little bit uncomfortable. This will feel tight, but I need you to stay still"
