Finally, it's Thanksgiving!
School is out, Grandma has arrived, Dad's in a better mood and Mom is so wrapped up in Grandma being here, she's laying off me and Preston... to me anyways. Mom still gossips about my relationship to Grandma of course.
Grandma flew in this morning after having to change her flight around. She got caught up in Greece and couldn't come the day she intended to. Of course, looking as fabulous as ever. She flaunts her long white hair, dresses classically stylish and is always iced out in diamonds. Everything about her is elegant. I strive to be her in my old age.
Mom pulled out the big guns for Thanksgiving. And by "big guns" I mean she hired a caterer. Instead of a casual dinner, she decided to throw a Thanksgiving party with her and my father's friends as well as their families. I asked her if I could invite Preston's family and she happily obliged.
This was the first time my parents met the Dunn's. When they arrived, I ran to the front door where my mom was letting people in and greeting them. The last thing I wanted was for Mr. Dunn's first impression of my family to come from either of my parents alone. My dad is too uptight and my mom is... well, she's a lot.
I pushed past my mother and opened the door. Alyssa immediately flew in, wrapping her arms around me!
"Hi Parker!" She squealed. "Thanks for inviting us! This is the first Thanksgiving where we can actually have a dinner that's edible."
Mr Dunn gave her a miffed look and rolled his eyes.
Alyssa looked around the foyer in awe.
"Your house is awesome! You should host the next cheer sleepover here."
Hah! I couldn't even fathom it. My parents would be buzzing around like flies and my mom, for sure, wouldn't give us the slightest bit of privacy.
"Yeah, that would be fun," I lied.
"Mom, this is Mr Dunn," I introduced him immediately hoping to get through it quickly.
"Hello! It's nice to finally meet you! Is your wife here with you?"
I elbowed my mom roughly in the side.
"Mom!" I nearly screamed.
Mr Dunn cleared his throat and briefly looked away. He was polite about her thoughtless question even though she didn't deserve it. I mean, I told her that Preston's mom wasn't with us here in the land of the living. Why would she ask that? She's such an airhead.
"It's okay," He said taking my mom's hand into a handshake. "My wife actually passed a couple of years ago."
My mom's smile dropped as a mortified look rightfully took its place.
"Oh my goodness, I'm so sorry. It was foolish of me to assume..."
"No, it's okay, really." Mr Dunn pat my mom lightly on the shoulder to reassure her.
I sucked my teeth at my mom as Mr Dunn and Alyssa ventured further into the house. She gave me an apologetic look but I just ignored her as I planned to do for the rest of the night.
My good mood returned as soon as I saw my boyfriend standing in the doorway. As usual, he was perfection.
Preston looked very casual. He was wearing long khaki colored cargo pants and a white band t shirt. His hair was damp, I assume from showering and he had majority of his ear piercings in.Just as I did to him, he smiled the moment we saw each other.
"Hey Princess," he said softly and smoothly.
Despite nearly passing out at the fact that he actually called me Princess, I ran into his arms immediately, letting him envelope me in a hug. I squeezed him tightly and reveled in the way his hand pet my head.
