The two boys walked back towards the carriages with Aelori walking in between them. Her paws started to freeze, so she did what she had too.
She started to jump on Evan's feet with each step that he took. Annoying him, until he would pick her up.
Aelori didn't quite understand why she stayed with the boys the whole day. They were an interesting duo. Evan was the fun, always happy, sometimes dumb part of the duo. Regulus is the more, suffer in silence type.
"No." Evan kicked her softly away with his feet. "I will not pick you up."
Aelori let out a huff but came out in a whine. She started to walk faster, until she was a few feet away from the boys. She sat down in the snow and watched them with big eyes. She gave him her best puppy-face, hoping he would pick her up.
Evan walked straight past her, with Regulus next to him.
She tried it again, again and again.
That is when she heard a groan and felt warm arms pulling her up. She got placed inside the robe, keeping her warm. That was until she noticed that it was Regulus.
An aroma of cologne entered her nose. Not as much as Evan, it was quite nice. She also smelled sandalwood and a hit of old books, maybe parchment.
Evan turned around and his eyes grew wide. If Regulus knew who he was holding, then he would throw her in the black lake in mere seconds.
Aelori kept her eyes forward, not connecting with Regulus or with Evan. Before she knew where they will be heading as they walked towards the dungeons.
She kept quiet, even when Evan tried to tell her to go. Not verbally, but with his blue eyes. A part of her wanted to see the Slytherin common room and be out of their hair in a nick of time.
Seeing that Aelori wasn't making a move, Evan noticed what she wanted. But the weird thing that stood out was that Regulus kept the creature close to him. He could have placed it outside, but no.
Evan quickly pushed Regulus back and whispered the passwords. Regulus lifted his eyebrows at his friend.
"What if Allie can talk all of the sudden."
"She can't." Regulus said in bored tone.
It didn't matter. Aelori already heard the password and couldn't hold in the eye roll. Of course, the password is 'silver scales'.
The door opened up and Regulus started walking through the common room.
The room was dark and ominous, the rough stone wall had a tint of green to it. They took a step down from the high floor before the entrance. There was a couch sitting before a green fire. There were multiple desk around the whole common room with students writing and reading.
What stood out the most was the big glass wall. The water was clear, and you could see seaweed flowing through the water. Little fish were swimming through the water.
Aelori flinched in Regulus arms when a giant squid swam before the glass.
"You want to take a look at it." Regulus said, taking Aelori and Evan by surprise.
The tone was calm and sweet, which was way to much out of character for him.
Regulus walked towards the window and sat Aelori down on the ground. There were two love seats pointed at the glass wall, with a small table between them. Regulus and Evan both took their own seat.
Aelori sat before the water, her snout pressed against the glass. She hated the ocean, she hates water. At home there was a lake her mom always sat, but she wouldn't touch it.
The only reason she has is because you never know what is under you when you take a swim. That was the reason why she never learned to swim either. She hates water, more than anything. Even baths scare her sometimes.
"Do you think she is cute?" Evan asked Regulus. Aelori kept her eyes on the fish that swam by. Sometimes hitting her paw against the glass to scare them away. Without even knowing her tail would swing from left and right because of it.
"Don't bully me, but I do."
This made Aelori's tail freeze in place. It was weird to see him so kind to her animal form. Can he not be nice like that to people?
"You will have to let her out tonight, you know that right?" Evan said to Regulus, grabbing a cigarette and lighting it up with his wand.
"I know." Regulus simply said while grabbing a book from the table. "Would you mind getting some food from the kitchen, I am not in the mood to go to the great hall."
Evan let out a groan of annoyance. But stood up nevertheless. He knew Regulus wouldn't hurt the creature. And he also knew that Aelori would kill him with her bare hands – well teeth – if he tried anything.
Evan heard his own stomach rumbling and wanted nothing more than chocolate cake. Regulus would never get it for him as it is 'not healthy'.
Aelori heard Evan leave the common room, hopefully to get her some food too. The rustling behind her, made her turn around.
Regulus was reading a book, a muggle book at that. He saw her watching her and he moved his hand down, moving his fingers over each other. He made a clicking sound with his tongue.
Aelori walked up towards him and instantly felt arms around her pulling her up. Regulus pulled the book up, while Aelori sat beside him. Leaning against him as there wasn't enough space.
"This is a great book." Regulus began. "It has a lot of different stories, but my favourite is Prince Caspian."
Aelori quickly noticed it was the book, Chronicles of Narnia. It was a book she had read over a million times as her mother had packed it for her.
Regulus started to explain the story to Aelori. It was so out of character for him, talking with a fox. But it made Aelori understand him more, understand the friendship he has with Pandora.
He wants someone to listen to him, not care about who he is, who he is meant to be. Someone like the little white fox sitting next to him. It doesn't know who he is or that he could snap his finger and get anything he want.
He wants to be normal, just like she wants to.
They both want to be normal, but faith will pull that all away from them. It is just a matter of time when the normal gets ripped out of the teenagers.
Maybe it will take years, maybe months. Or it might have been already happening. Or it has already happened, the moment they were born into this world.
