Goddesses may perceive time differently because when Artemis assured them dawn was coming there was nothing other than a dark, cold sky outside. Up on the hill, Westover Hall's windows were completely lightless. Devi wondered if any of the students at the military school noticed that two of their classmates were missing from their beds.
The Hunters broke camp quickly as they'd set it up. Percy shivered in the snow, the Hunters looked bored, Nico and Bianca were talking off to the side, it seemed like she was breaking the news to her little brother, and Devi was drawing stick figures in the snow. Her first thought to keep her from being bored was to get onto the ground and play in the snow. She started to draw the first things that came to mind.
As she was working on what she thought was her masterpiece, Percy approached her and stared at her in confusion. "What are you drawing?"
"You." she deadpanned.
Percy huffed, crossing his arms over his chest. "I don't have horns or a tail, and I definitely don't carry around a trident. Plus, I'm way taller than those stupid-looking stick figures."
"Sure, Jackson."
He stood behind her, quietly observing the girl. From what Percy heard from people around camp, all he knew was that Devi was the Daughter of Apollo, a fierce hater for the Son of Poseidon, someone who bites her nails when she's anxious, and her mom was a doctor. None of that explained to him what secret she was keeping from him. It was about her little panic episode, but the way Thalia and Devi had handled it made him more suspicious.
A few moments later, Percy leaned over Devi's shoulder, trying to take a peek at what the girl added to her drawing. There was Percy (in his devil outfit) with a frown on his face, standing next to him was Thalia, her hair spiked up, and Devi with her long hair. Grover was off to the side with his curly hair and goat horns, standing next to them were two people, which Percy assumed were the di Angelo siblings. Above them, there was a girl with curly hair with a sword through her heart. The sword seemed to belong to the boy in front of her who had his arm extended out. On their right side was a small girl holding something above her, but Devi hadn't finished the drawing. She just sat there, silently staring at the picture in the snow, her brows furrowed.
She noticed that Percy was looking and swiped a hand at the drawings, messing them up. "What are you doing?" She snapped.
"What did you just draw? Who were those people?" Percy questioned. "Is it something about Annabeth?"
Devi thanked all the gods when Thalia and Grover came up to them, so she didn't have to answer Percy's questions. They huddled around to hear about what the goddess said to them. Devi didn't feel like talking, so she lazily nodded to Percy to tell them.
He explained how Bianca joined the Hunters and Thalia voiced her disgust for Zoe. Grover sighed dreamily when Percy mentioned Artemis.
The sky finally began to brighten. Artemis muttered. "About time. He's so-o-o lazy during winter."
"I mean, so am I" Devi shrugged.
"You guys are, um, waiting for the sunrise?" Percy asked, confused.
"Yes, Fish Beard." Devi rolled her eyes for what felt like the nth time. Artemis let a small smile slip at the hostile nickname for the boy.
"No need to be sassy, Dazzle Diva."
She raised an eyebrow at the new nickname. "Dazzle Diva?"
"Yeah. What's wrong with Dazzle Di-"
