I was planning a murder in my head.
The murder of my bestfriend.
I've always called Vedika a kaali-zubaan, because all the wrong things that come out of her mouth also come true. She had texted me yesterday saying that she hoped our car broke down when we left for Ratnagiri.
And guess what...
Our car broke down.
In the middle of nowhere.
We were already late, since Kartik had taken his sweet time packing for the wedding because his birdbrain didn't think of doing it before we were supposed to leave. I'd cursed him for the same the whole ride, while he had successfully ignored me.
And then suddenly the car had jerked, the engine making a roaring noise. I glanced at Kartik but he looked equally confused.
"What was that noise? " I asked him.
"It was the car trying to sing. It's terrible at it, right? " He said, his words dripping with sarcasm.
" How are you so good at cracking bad jokes? " I glared at him. Did he really wish to exchange insults at the moment?
"Just stop." Kartik said, irritated.
And the car stopped.
What the-
My eyes widened. My accusing glare met Kartik's guilty one as I said, "Why did you say that. See what happened now. The car stopped. "
"Are you serious. The car didn't stop because I asked it to. " his glare turned angry.
"Oh but it did. Now do something. "
"Okay let's try again," Kartik said rubbing his hands and then turning up the keys, "Start up"
The car did not start.
Kartik tried again. And again. And again. But the car refused to start everytime. The engine roared before dying down another second.
"See, it doesn't listen to me" Kartik rolled his eyes.
"Why would it listen to you? You sound like a chalk being scratched on a black board." I was pissed at him. More like, at the situation he had landed us in.
Kartik ignored my comment and got out of the car. He opened the bonnet and concentrated on finding what was wrong with the car like he was Sherlock Holmes inspecting a crime scene.
He was still in his formals, midnight blue shirt and cream trousers. He managed to carry that office guy look quite well, I must admit. But he was still Kartik, who yawned so big as if he'd swallow the whole earth in one go.
I got out of the car too, just so I wasn't sitting inside alone. I saw Kartik sorting some jumbled up wires and my thoughts drifted elsewhere. There was just something about a man doing this.. Mechanical stuff.
Alright, lets find something else to focus on. I told myself.
I looked around to find nothing but trees, not even a signboard. The road was lit with a faraway street light, the headlights of the car the only source for vision. It creeped me out.
These were the kind of places in movies where the girl either gets killed by a serial killer or kidnapped by one.
"This is all your fault. " I told Kartik.
"What? " he looked up, his sleeves folded up. Ugh, why? I decided to focus on his face.
"If only you had asked the driver to take us there, we wouldn't be standing in the middle of nowhere with a broken car. " it was the truth. Kartik had asked the driver to not come because he could drive himself. Like, why dude?
