Ding, ding, ding!

The alarm blared loudly, and I woke up instantly, running a hand through my hair. "These damn alarms wake me up like it's the end of the world," I mumbled angrily, hopping out of bed. Today was the first day of school, and I was not feeling it in the morning. The summer vacation had kicked off my whole year. My friend group had said they wanted it to be a little bit more special.

So, we made a bucket list and checked everything off it. Except for one thing: finding "the one" for me. I groaned angrily as I switched on the shower. Well, if I considered Jake or Barry as "the one," then I was a stupid idiot. I had met them on summer break, but they were both jerks.

Jake was cheating on me with some random chick who looked like a kid had decided to make her into a messed-up version of Barbie. If that was his taste in girls, then I didn't want to be with him. Next was Barry, a sweet, lovable guy—or so I thought. One time, I decided to hold his hand, but when I tried to, he pushed my hand away.

He said he didn't want to be seen with me in public. That's where I ended that horror of a relationship. So, yeah, that was... somewhat of a good summer. I got out of the shower and slipped on my favorite sweatpants, a cute black crop top, and some random shoes. I grabbed my jacket and headed for school.

The sight of school made my mind go blank. I was not looking forward to zoning out in class.

I walked inside and saw my two best friends, Zoe and Mateo. Mateo was gay, while Zoe was straight. I high-fived both of them. "So, that summer was a nightmare, but you made it just a little bit better," I said, laughing with them as we walked. "Of course, we make everything better," Mateo said, giggling uncontrollably. Zoe nodded her head. "I guess we do, but did you hear that Ace got into a fight with Jake this morning?" Zoe said. Mateo nodded. "It's like they had some history together, maybe stole a girl?" Mateo said.

"Guys, do you realize that Ace got into a fight with my ex-boyfriend?" I said, shell-shocked. "Oh yeah... WAIT, WHAT?!" Zoe said, coming to a stop. "That's... kinda sus," Mateo said. How did I feel about this? I kinda felt happy. Jake deserved an ass-beating. But by my enemy? Eh, I didn't really care.

"What do you mean, 'sus'?" I said, narrowing my eyes at Mateo. "Well... that's code that he likes you, babes," he said, smirking at me. First, I thought he kinda had a point, but I immediately shrugged it off. "Pfft, him? Liking me? Yeah, not the best guess, Mateo," I said, rolling my eyes. Mateo growled and Zoe laughed. "I agree with Autumn, I mean... they're enemies, why would her enemy like her?" Zoe said, crossing her arms.

"I'm telling you, it's chemistry between those two!" Mateo said, trying to make a point. "Well, you're running late for chemistry, so get to class before the teacher gives you detention," I said. Mateo rushed to class, waving goodbye to us. "Seriously? Things between us? Yeah, not happening," I said, turning to Zoe. "You've got that right, girl, anyway, time for us to get to class," she said, starting to walk away. I caught up with her, still laughing about the whole Ace thing. But something kept nagging in the back of my mind. Maybe he did like me, but I wasn't going to keep the secret going. Time to expose this idiot for good.
