As soon as the zip-line was finished, we made a run for it. The sirens were pretty loud and seemed to be getting closer by the second. "Ace! Where are we going?!" I yelled. He just kept running and holding my hand. After a few more minutes of running, we made it to an empty alleyway.
"Really? This?" I said. "Shut up. I was just running in a random direction," he grumbled. I rolled my eyes but remembered that the cops were after us. "What now, genius?" I said angrily.
Ace rolled his eyes. "You're hiding up there," he said, pointing to the top of a building. And there was no ladder. How did I end up with a complete idiot? "There's no ladder," I said, turning to him angrily.
"I'll put you up there," he said. Before I could even ask what the hell he was talking about, he picked me up. For some reason, when I felt his soft and warm hands on my hips, my heart was racing. "No, no, stop it," I thought. But the feeling was so addictive.
I was then on top of the roof of the small building, panting a little. "You okay?" he called. "Yeah, yeah, I'm fine..." I said. I stared down at the floor, questioning my weird behavior when he touched me. Oh no. Is it one of those enemies-to-lovers things and I end up with him at the end? Ugh, what are these feelings? I shook it off and told myself that he was my enemy, and I shouldn't enjoy his touch.
Suddenly, I heard the police sirens stop, and a car door opened and closed. I looked down, making sure most of my face was covered. There I saw two cops, cornering Ace. My heart sank to my stomach, and I felt worried for him. Although I could hear what they were saying, I wished I didn't. "You are going to jail, buddy," one of the cops said. Ace chuckled darkly. "I'm not going anywhere," he said.
"Yes, you are. And where was your little girlfriend? Did she run away?" one of the cops asked. He kept quiet. He is such a— "Hey! What are you doing up there?!" I heard one of the cops yell. I realized that I wasn't as hidden as I thought I was. "Autumn, run!" Ace yelled. I got up from the floor and looked around, trying to spot somewhere to jump.
I heard one of the cops climbing up fast, so I just ran and jumped off the building, landing on another one. I laughed in disbelief before running and jumping to different buildings. I am such a badass for doing this—Suddenly, as I jumped, I realized that there wasn't another building. I closed my eyes tightly, waiting for the impact of the ground to instantly kill me, but I didn't feel hurt.
When I opened my eyes, I saw Ace, holding me in his arms. Well, not the first time this happened. "Hi...?" I said. He rolled his eyes. "Shut up. Now, I'm gonna hold the cops off. You have to just run and don't look back, okay?" he said. I nodded, and he put me down, and I started running again. I didn't even know where I was going; I was just following Ace's directions. It felt like I was about to pass out from all the running that I was doing. When I finally stopped, I found myself in front of my house again. "How the..." I whispered. I stared at my house. I could just walk in and leave Ace all alone out there. He could manage, right? Right? Sighs and turns around, walking back What the hell is wrong with me.
