A proper burial

The next day, the sun began to rise, the birds chirping in the nearby trees and the ground wet and fresh with mud and the air thick, misty with fog and mosquitoes.  Simon had been asleep as he had swapped over guard duty with Charles at a point during the evening, but his sleep was soon interrupted by the sounds of the many gang members waking up, talking and moving around the camp in the rundown buildings of Lakay. He sat up in his bedroll and rubbed his eyes, yawning softly as his eyes adjusted to being awake again. He slowly grabbed his hat off the floor beside him and put it on his head, reaching for his gunbelt as Mary-Beth came over to him, his eyes glancing towards her as he saw her approach.

"Morning, Mr Lawson, Abigail told me to come tell you once you woke up to come see her, I think her, Charles and Sadie are planning something. Not sure what." She said with a slight shrug and that usual friendly smile she always had. "Thank you Ma'am, and please calling me Simon is fine Miss." He said with a smile as he stood up and stretched his arms out slightly before carefully putting his gunbelt around his waist now.

Mary-Beth giggled and smiled "Well, then you better call me Mary-Beth and not miss or ma'am or else its unfair!" She said in a playful manner to him and turned to leave "Abigail is outside with the others." She said and left the sleeping area and went to go and do some reading. Simon smiled softly at Mary-Beth's teasing comment and finished buckling his belt around his waist and headed to the door of the building he was in and went outside. As he opened the door, he was half- blinded by the sunlight and his sense of smell overwhelmed with the thick, foggy and damp air filled with the smell of the swamps and mud. He looked around and then saw Abigail standing by Sadie and Charles in a small circle and talking amongst themselves.

Charles glanced in his direction as Sadie was talking to Abigail and waved Simon over slightly getting the women's attention slightly as well. Simon then walked over to them and as he was about to reach them tipped his hat slightly in a respectful greeting manner. "Morning ladies, Charles." He said softly as he shook Charles' hand and stood by all of them now and glanced towards Abigail. "I hear you wanted to see me Ms Roberts?"

Abigail nodded "Please, Abigail. I know you are big on manners but you don't have to act so polite to me especially how long I have known you now." She said with a slight smile which soon faded as she began to speak again. "Listen, I have an idea..we lost folk in that job and well, it ain't fair for the law to have their bodies. So I thought me and Charles could go to the morgue tonight and steal the bodies. Give Lenny and Hosea, y'know a proper burial."

Simon nodded his head and glanced towards Charles as he began to speak now "I have already agreed, but I can't carry both those bodies myself and we don't have a lot of able bodied men but if you don't want to come I understand. We can make a plan, that's why we were discussing with Sadie here." Charles said crossing his arms lightly in front of him. Simon nodded his head and looked between all three of them, shifting slightly on his feet before speaking: "Well, before I answer...what do you think Sadie?"

Sadie sighed lightly, her hands resting on the handles of her revolvers "Look, it's Abigail's Idea...I mean we don't know if Arthur or the others will ever come back so we might as well try and give those lost a better fate than being in the morgue. I think you should go...I'll keep things together here around camp and go post some letters and clues for our missing friends incase any of them turn up. But you all do this proper, I don't want anyone else dying." She said glancing from one person to the next and for a second it felt like her gaze at Simon lasted a bit longer than the other two.

Simon nodded his head "Well, it's settled then...i'll help." He said as he put his hands on his waist and looked towards Charles. Charles nodded his head and patted his shoulder "We leave tonight around sunset." He said before walking off to go prepare, leaving Simon with the two women. "I promise none of us are going to die." Simon said as he looked towards Sadie meeting her gaze now. Sadie nodded and put a hand on Abigail's arm "Just be careful, both of you" she said softly as she glanced at Simon a final time and walked off.

The day was rather normal and boring and mostly everyone in the gang was trying to distract themselves from everything that had happened the past few days. As the sun began to set, Abigail, Charles and Simon prepared themselves and some of the horses for their mission as well as going over the plan. Around 6:30 pm, Simon headed out to the horses where Abigail and Charles were waiting, as he walked over he walked past Sadie who was on guard duty herself and stopped briefly to stand next to her. Sadie glanced at him briefly before looking out in front of her "Be safe, Simon." She said softly and not much more was needed to be heard by Simon than that nor did much more have to be said. "I will." Simon said softly back and looked at her briefly, his heart feeling odd for the first time in his life and he walked off to join the other two by the horses.

"Ready?" Charles asked as Simon mounted his horse, holding the reins and following suite with Abigail. "Yeah, come on." Simon stated as he waited for them and the three rode off for the town Morgue in Saint-Denis. It was damn risky to be coming back here so soon after the robbery but if they risked waiting they would miss their chance and the morgue was supposedly the least guarded part of the police station. The three of them stopped their horses a short walk away but close enough that they could ride away fast if necessary. The three dismounted "Charles and I, we will deal with the guards inside, Abigail you just distract the guard out front so we can slip in and out." Simon said, the two of them nodding in silent agreement. Abigail walked up to the guard pretending to be a woman of the night, which she was rather good at since she used to be one way back in the day or so Simon had heard. Him and Charles slipped inside the morgue, once the guards were distracted and began searching for the bodies of Lenny and Hosea. There was little guards inside and each were taken out silently by the two strong men. It didn't take long and soon they found the bodies, Charles picked up Hosea and Simon carrying young Lenny, they slipped back out the morgue and gave Abigail a silent signal to come to the horses again. They loaded up the bodies on the back of Taima and Mary and waited for Abigail who didn't take long to come back over. The three of them then headed to camp and gathered everyone.

A lot of the gang was distraught at the sight of the two bodies but everyone agreed once Abigail spoke "We are giving them a proper burial a bit away from camp so everyone come along." She then began walking and everyone followed, they went roughly about 400m north of where their camp was and buried the two bodies, Charles even made two crosses out of wood and carved dates and names into them, almost like tombstones and put them above the bodies. Everyone took their time saying their goodbyes, and the night dragged on, each leaving one by one so not as to attract to much attention and lead unwanted people to camp. Soon, it was just Abigail, Sadie and Simon left at the graves as Charles had just began to leave. "We got another problem." Abigail said, her voice hoarse and tear-strained and you could see she was trying not to cry a little.

Simon and Sadie looked at her in unison and Sadie asked "What is it?" Abigail sighed looking at them both "Let's go back to camp and i'll explain" She said as she began to walk back to the camp and Simon followed with Sadie, once they arrived Abigail turned to face them both: "It's John, I was talking to those officers and well they mentioned him...there's talk of hanging him..." Sadie crossed her arms, her face frowning and she grumbled softly "Dammit..." She muttered under her breath and sighed "Abigail, try get some rest.. we'll uh, figure something out soon, okay?" Abigail nodded and sighed "Okay, goodnight you two and thanks again." She said before walking off the the sleeping quarters.

Sadie looked at Simon now "I'm glad you made it back safely...you should go get some rest too, it's been a long day." She said softly and Simon nodded as he felt very tired "I'll be up in a few to take guard duty. Goodnight Sadie." He said softly and went into the sleeping quarters now. "Goodnight Simon.." Sadie said softly even though she knew he couldn't hear her now and sighed softly going with her repeater to stand guard.
