**Chapter 9: Unexpected Invitations**
*Francesca's P.O.V.*
The days at Williams Corp. began to blur together as my workload increased, but something else was changing too—my relationship with Xander. Despite his demanding nature and our rocky start, we found ourselves growing closer.
Xander started to share more about his day-to-day operations and even his long-term goals for the company. I found myself intrigued by his vision and dedication, and slowly, my initial resentment turned into admiration. He was still the same arrogant boss, but I could see the man beneath the surface.
One afternoon, while I was buried in a pile of reports, Xander walked into my office with a peculiar look on his face.
"Francesca, I need a favor," he said, leaning against the doorframe.
I looked up, curious. "What kind of favor?"
"There's a fundraising gala this Saturday evening. It's important for networking and company image. I need you to accompany me as my date."
His words caught me off guard. "Your date? Isn't there someone else who'd be more suitable for that role?"
He smirked. "I insist on you. Besides, it's part of your job to support me in all professional capacities."
I hesitated, unsure how to respond. "I don't think—"
"Let me put it this way," he interrupted. "If you don't accompany me, I'll have no choice but to reconsider the support we provide to Vespr Coffeebar. It would be a shame if something happened to the place you hold so dear."
My eyes widened. "Are you blackmailing me?"
"Think of it as a strong suggestion," he said, his smirk never faltering. "A team will arrive at 4 PM to help you get ready, and I will pick you up at 6 PM sharp."
Realizing I had no choice, I sighed. "Fine, I'll go."

Saturday arrived quickly, and by 4 PM, a team of stylists and makeup artists arrived at my apartment. They worked tirelessly, transforming me into someone I barely recognized. My hair was styled in loose waves, my makeup was flawlessly elegant, and I wore a stunning black evening gown that fit like a glove.
By the time Xander arrived at 6 PM, I was ready. He looked dashing in a classic black tuxedo, and for a moment, I was struck by how effortlessly handsome he was.
"You look beautiful," he said, his eyes lingering on me longer than necessary.
"Thanks," I replied, feeling a blush creep up my cheeks. "You don't look too bad yourself."
He offered his arm, and I took it, feeling a strange mix of excitement and nervousness.
---
The gala was held at a luxurious hotel, with glittering chandeliers and an air of sophistication. As we entered, all eyes were on us, and Xander's grip on my arm tightened slightly. He navigated the room with ease, introducing me to various influential figures.
Throughout the evening, I found myself enjoying Xander's company more than I expected. He was charming and attentive, and I saw a side of him that was rarely on display at the office. There were moments when our eyes met, and I felt a connection that was both thrilling and terrifying.
During a quiet moment, we stood by the bar, and I couldn't help but ask, "Why did you really want me to come with you tonight?"
He looked at me, his expression softening. "Because I trust you, Francesca. You're more than just my PA. You see me for who I am, not just the CEO. That's rare."
His words touched me, and for the first time, I realized that beneath the tough exterior, Xander Williams was just as vulnerable as anyone else.
The evening ended with Xander escorting me back to my apartment. As we stood at the door, there was an awkward silence between us.
"Thank you for tonight," he said softly. "You were amazing."
"Thank you for inviting me," I replied, my heart pounding.
Before I could react, he leaned in and placed a gentle kiss on my cheek. "Goodnight, Francesca."
"Goodnight, Xander," I whispered, watching him walk away.
As I closed the door behind me, I couldn't shake the feeling that something fundamental had shifted between us. The lines between professional and personal were beginning to blur, and I wasn't sure what that meant for the future.
