I opened my eyes again when I heard Chuck's familiar voice on the other side of my hut.

"Evelyn, are you okay?" He asked, knocking on the door.

He noticed I wasn't answering and spoke again. "I'll come back later, " he mumbled, but before he could leave me alone again, I raised my voice.

"You can come in."

Without saying another word, he swung open the door, a plate of food in his hands. I got out of bed, watching what he brought with him. A wide smile brightened his face as he walked closer to me.

"Hey, small guy," I said, rubbing his curls.

"You missed dinner so I brought you this."

He held out the plate to me and gently grabbed it in my hands. I offered a grateful smile as I eagerly began eating what was in front of me. I hadn't realized just how exhausting running would be. Eating seemed like the best way to help me regain.

When Chuck came to visit me, it showed how much I longed for human connection. I had been feeling quite isolated, and seeing a friendly face was a good start.

"I miss you, Evelyn." Chuck sighed and his smile which used to be the light of her day, was vanishing and replaced by a heartbreaking sigh.

He sat on the mattress, taking a place next to me. It was a small one, but two people could easily sit there.

"Ever since you started running I have nobody to talk to or do my pranks."

I gave him a small smile trying to reassure him, if all he was sad about was his pranks it wasn't that bad. "I'm sure there is someone who would do pranks with you, why don't you do one to Minho while we run? I'm sure his reaction could be priceless."

And that's when I thought about it, I was the only girl, but he was the only child. He couldn't play with friends like an ordinary kid or spend the afternoon with his parents. Why would they even send a kid here, what could be so horrible out here that they had to steal him from his childhood? Did I even have a childhood?

Chuck nodded, the smile lighting up his face again. "Oh! I could ask Simon to help me!"

"I'm sure he'd love to, what are you planning to do?"
I asked as I finished my dish. His smile grew on his cheek as he put one finger to cover his mouth, implying to keep the secret.

"Secret."

I chuckled and nodded at his words. "Alright, if you say so."

As I quickly got out of bed, I reached for some clothes from the box. Even though I would probably be in the slammer in a while, I could at least take a shower.

"I'm gonna take a shower before Alby finds me." I sighed at the thought. I couldn't wait to be done with the pit, it was probably the worst, but at least I was used to it now. I can't even remember sleeping on a real mattress.

As I was about to open the door, Chuck patted my shoulder. "Could I sleep here tonight? I'm tired of the grass."

"Sure thing buddy." I nodded and felt really bad for all the other Gladers who simply had a hammock or the grass.

As soon as I stepped out, I saw a bunch of people waiting for me. Jeez, the punishment really couldn't wait.

Alby was the first to speak out. "Evelyn-"
