I didn't sleep that night. All I did was reread the names over and over again. Trying to remember anything that was related to those. Could Minho be called the leader for being a keeper? Maybe.
Alby A6 the assiduous. He was always strict about rules, it worked.
Frypan A4 the faithful. He was always there for me. Chuck A3 the friend. A friend to many probably.
Newt A5 the glue. I didn't really know what was the meaning behind this one, but I'm sure I would find it soon enough.
The two others though, Thomas and Teresa. I didn't know them, and maybe I would never do either. What even was group B? And a betrayer? I thought I was smarter than this, and that I could understand why, but obviously, it wasn't the case. I was so confused that at some point I let go of my thoughts and drifted to sleep.
It didn't last long until I was back to running in the maze. Ben and I ran for a few days, but he always seemed to notice how I wouldn't speak. I'd stay quiet for most of the track, I had enough of speaking.
"You're so quiet, what's wrong?" He asked, grabbing my wrist and stopping me from going any further. It didn't hurt, but it was enough to stop me in my run. I told him about the voice, yet I'm not sure he truly understood what it meant. He acted like it was normal to be ill in this sort of place and it made sense. But if I told him what I heard, what I dreamt or just what I wore, he would freak out.
Everybody would go insane if the only girl and last greenie came up with those words. Yes, I liked speaking and being loud, but I liked it even better when I didn't have to. I did trust him, but how was I even supposed to explain what was happening?
"Nothing I just want to concentrate on running," I said but he jogged back to my side. "Come on, it's not like you. What's on your mind?" Ben questioned.
"I'm just thinking." And I ran faster leaving no place for arguments. Stop. Talking.
"About what?" He ran to my side.
"Not getting killed by a Griever." That was a clever answer, yet no one I wanted to say.
He signed and changed the topic, at least he knew he shouldn't force me about it. "Hawk is getting back to running tomorrow. They're putting him back with you."
"What?" That was enough to make me stop running for real this time. "Why?"
He shook his shoulder in unknowledge. "They wouldn't let Minho with him, for obvious reasons, and all the other Runners were doing a great job with their actual duo." He explained, annoyed.
"And what about you? Can't they just let him run alone?" So they wouldn't want the guy who broke his nose to run with him, but if it was white me it didn't matter? Bullshit.
"They set me back with Minho, while they don't trust Hawk anymore and need him to regain composure. I guess the Keeper's solution was to put him with you. To toughen him up."
I knew they were Keepers, but those so-called leaders must have had something in their brains to think I would agree to that. They wouldn't care anyway, they would only do what was best for them. And that often concluded in disappointment.
"Ugh fine." I groaned and proceeded with the run, may as well do something useful for my last day with Ben. "Why do you get to know everything and I don't?" I continued.
"Well, they don't trust you either." He said softly, expecting how I would react.
That was good news.
I get it, I'm a girl, I kick guys who get in my way, I have issues and I'm weird. But where had trust ever been mentioned? If you compared me with some of the builders, I could tell you something was missing in them too.
