"Can you stop staring at me?" I asked as I ran ahead of Hawk, which was weird since they always put the most experienced one in the front. But the last thing I wanted was to be restricted to the pace of the boy.
I hated them all for putting him with me again. I was done with his glances and words, not just of him but of everyone. I wanted my revenge, I wanted them to feel what it felt like. But I couldn't, not when I was all alone against them.
Yes, some Gladers would support me, but they couldn't choose my side, because they didn't know. They weren't aware of what happened in the dark, what I heard outside my cabin.
I'd choose a griever over them any day.
A 'joke' once in a while, yet that was far from a joke. It didn't make me laugh, it could only make them chuckle.
"I'm not, stop overthinking, I'm just looking ahead." He casually responded.
I took a turn left trying to get away from him, but he caught up. "I told you I was sorry! What do you want more?"
"I'm tired Hawk!" I snapped and twisted around to face him, but still keeping an arm's distance between us. And if you'd ask me, that was still way too close.
I never liked physical touch, even more, when they weren't meant in a good way. The only contact I could deal with were Ben's and Chuck's hugs. But the fingers of others brushing my skin or taking hold of my hand for no apparent reason never made sense.
"I'm exhausted of the looks and the comments I get from boys like you. Do you know how many times I had to defend myself here, and not even because of a Griever?" I snapped at him as my hand quickly found my way to my hair, pulling behind my ear the strand that didn't fit in my ponytail.
"Well take those as compliments!" He raised his hand as if it was nothing. A shucking compliment? That's what he thought it was.
"Excuse me?" I scoffed in disbelief, how could someone ever think that way?
"They think you're pretty, just don't take it wrong." Hawk crossed his arms and I hated how casual he looked.
"How could something ever leaving your mouth be meant as a compliment?"
I started walking the other way, I wouldn't wait another second with him. "I'm done! We're not running together anymore." Alby would understand, I know he would.
"Hey! he got behind me, It's not up to you to decide that!"
"Yeah, and neither it's yours." It took all in me to hold back my fist, but there wasn't even a reason why I should hold back.
But the loud metallic noise we heard so often in the maze started again. The ground shook and I almost lost balance. Both of us listened in silence to examine the sound. It couldn't be the door, they didn't change during the day or so we thought. The last remaining option was the worst, it was a griever.
"Quick come here." He said, motioning for another direction. I knew I should have followed him, but I couldn't be left alone with him anymore.
"No, I'm not following you anywhere." I stayed still, grievers liked me. I hope.
"Get your klunk over here! You want to get killed or what?"
"I survived a night with them, I do not need tips." But the noise was getting closer and I knew that it was only a matter of time before one came at us. If we didn't stop our useless chit-chats, one of us was getting killed.
"Minho did." He muttered under his breath, but I heard him. Damn well, I did.
"You're so unbelievably stupid, you know that?"
