Chapter 46
Nyrah and Aston were sitting in the car, heading back to Archer Mansion in heavy silence. Aston glanced at Nyrah, whose mood had been heavy and withdrawn since they left her home. Her cheeks still bore the faint tracks of dried tears, and Aston's heart ached, not knowing how to comfort her.
The car halted in a sea of red brake lights, caught in traffic. Aston noticed a woman weaving between the vehicles, her arms laden with fresh roses. She approached their car and gently knocked on the window.
"Sir, please buy these roses for your beloved. She will be happy to receive them," the woman said with a hopeful smile.
Aston looked at Nyrah, who seemed lost in her thoughts, her eyes distant and sad. "Okay, give me all of them," he said, pulling out his wallet and handing the woman $100.
"But sir, I don't have change," she said, looking apologetic.
"It's okay, keep it," Aston replied. As the traffic began to clear, and the car started moving again, he turned to Nyrah, who was now looking at him with a mix of confusion and curiosity. He felt a knot in his throat but pushed through it. "Um, these are for you. And I'm... I'm really sorry for everything."
Nyrah's gaze softened as she looked at the roses. They were beautiful, a vibrant red that contrasted with the grayness of her mood. Aston braced himself for her rejection, but instead, she gently took the bouquet from his hands. As she did, a thorn pricked her finger.
"Ahhh," she gasped, wincing in pain. Without thinking, Aston reached for her hand, bringing her finger to his lips and kissing the tiny wound.
Embarrassed, Nyrah pulled her hand away from his lips, saying, "It's okay," as they both continued to look out of the window, sitting in silence.
Nyrah glanced at her husband and then at the beautiful roses, a symbol of love, realizing that love never comes without pain. She smiled, touching the soft petals of the roses, finding a small comfort in their delicate beauty amidst the thorns.
After an hour or so, they finally arrived at the grand estate. Guards snapped to attention, greeting Aston and Nyrah with respectful nods, while servants scurried about, eagerly offering refreshments. Nyrah, exhausted from the journey, glided gracefully to her room, craving solitude and rest.
Aston, on the other hand, strode purposefully towards his study, his mind already turning to the pressing matters at hand. There had been a troubling dip in the value of his shares, a challenge that demanded his immediate attention.
As he settled into the familiar confines of his study, surrounded by the rich scent of leather-bound books and polished wood, Aston immersed himself in a sea of documents. The world outside his study ceased to exist as he poured over financial reports and market analyses.
Aston was just analyzing the previous reports of transactions when he came across a glaring omission. Certain information was missing, purposefully omitted, and he realized this now with a growing sense of unease. He wasn't a fool; he knew exactly who had access to the company's wealth other than himself.
Meanwhile, Nyrah gently arranged the roses in a vase, pouring water into it to keep the flowers fresh. It was the first thing she did upon entering her room.
She was smiling like a fool, gazing at the roses lovingly. And why not? This was the first thing her good-for-nothing husband had ever given her. Despite his many flaws and the constant frustrations he caused her, this simple gesture of affection touched her deeply.
Aston intruded into his father's room, relieved to find it empty as his father was away on a business trip. He searched the drawers, the armoire, and every shelf, but still, he couldn't find what he was looking for. Frustrated, he slammed his hand on the table, and as his hand collided with the surface, he felt something unusual beneath the tablecloth.
With a growing sense of anticipation, Aston lifted the cloth and discovered a hidden compartment. Inside, he found what he had been desperately seeking: the keys to James' study. A smirk spread across his face as he held the keys.
Aston unlocked the study, where all the old records of the company's transactions, investments, profits, and other essentials were kept. This room housed the meticulous records from the time when his father was the head of the company and Aston was still learning the ropes before taking over the business.
Aston began his search, methodically going through the transactions he had conducted, but found nothing suspicious. Frustrated yet determined, he moved to another section and pulled out a black file. As he did, a letter slipped from between the pages and fluttered to the floor. Puzzled, Aston picked it up and started reading it, line by line, sentence by sentence.
His eyes widened in shock, and the letter slipped from his hands as he stood frozen, unable to believe what he had just discovered. The letter revealed that his father had been having an affair with a German woman named Nina Schneider.
Aston's mind raced, trying to process the revelation. He shifted the files on the floor, uncovering more letters and evidence of the affair. The discovery shook him to his core, leaving him reeling from the betrayal and the secrets that had been hidden for so long.
